At the time of the Revolution, 8 of the 13 colonies had established churches. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_church_and_state_in_the_United_States#Tabular_summary The First Amendment was intended to prevent the federal government from disestablishing any state church, in addition to preventing it from establishing a national church.
