I think part of the narrative about Syrup Village comes from trying to convince friends who still aren't fully hooked yet at this point to try to keep going until arcs like Baratie and Arlong (generally where a lot of fans say they got fully hooked into the series long term even if they had mixed feelings earlier). I think you're also catching a lot of the themes and character building earlier than others might who are more plot oriented readers.

Yeah I never fully understood all the Syrup Village hate. I guess if you go in expecting a surface-level shounen battle manga then you'll be disappointed? But I think you hit the nail on the head; One Piece is about characters. Always has been, always will be. And since I'ev always been here for that, I've always enjoyed Syrup Village and Usopp (kind of a similar thing there to; a lot of people will say it takes them hundreds of episodes to like Usopp, but I also liked him from the start). Thinking about it a bit more, perhaps I'm (and you?) way more willing to just trust an author than most people; and if you haven't decided to trust Oda yet you might misunderstand the purpose of Syrup Village and Usopp. Shrug.
