Rob Not

OK, this is a long one. It seems like there’s been a steady accumulation of misunderstandings that have snowballed into each other over the second half of this season and pulled you guys really far off course in terms of understanding what’s been happening. Even just little things like, for example, thinking the MPs only operate in one place and then taking that to mean that Annie is further away and that Stohess must be their biggest city when none of those were the case. The biggest thing, aside from the Annie logistics stuff (I wrote something on the previous ep), is that you seem to have forgotten the stakes set up in Eren’s trial. The government does not see Eren as an asset after the battle of Trost and the only reason he isn’t handed over the MPs to be executed is because Erwin promises dramatic results from the next expedition after staging a wild public distraction with Levi. Does this seem like an entirely unreasonable stance for the MPs to take and are their arguments mutually inconsistent and sound like throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks? Yes, and you picked up on that immediately. That’s *really* weird, though, isn’t it? But it seems that you chalked this up to bad writing rather than it being a big arrow pointing at something you’re meant to notice. You also saw the Marquis who played chess with Pixis earlier in the season not caring about anyone else, how the government was willing to just kill 20% of the population, how a rich merchant felt total impunity in demanding people die for his property in the middle of a battle, and how Erwin and Pixis even being seen together is a problem. These all point to one big thing - the people in charge of this world are not in this for anyone but themselves and for some reason they see Eren as dangerous. That Eren’s life is hanging by a thread in this way, that everyone knows this, and that the Scouts weren’t going to be getting any help as everyone expects them to fail as always is meant to be the sword over everyone’s head for everything that happens afterwards, but this point seems to have gotten lost somewhere along the way. So Erwin finds himself in the position where the most important thing to ever happen to humanity in the walls - Eren, who had just secured humanity's first ever victory against the titans - is completely disposable by those in charge and that anything short of dramatic and undeniable results in about a month’s time will result in the government demanding Eren be handed over for execution. Erwin is navigating not just a military situation but a bigger and nastier political one… and then a huge monkey wrench gets thrown in with there being a spy who found where they were hiding and killed their titan test subjects. Now the original plan has even less chance of success if someone can sneak amongst them that way for such a long journey outside the walls, any slip-up is what the MPs are waiting for to get their way, there’s no way to know who is working for who outside of Erwin’s inner circle, and there’s a hard deadline in about 3 weeks. Erwin and Hange hatch a new plan based on the question he asks Eren - “*what* do you think the enemy is?” and the answer they came up with is that there must be more human titans hiding amongst them and the Scouts should be able to capture them with some trickery (the titans somehow knew to attack Trost just as the Scouts were their furthest away, which was already a red flag). *That* would be something *so big* that no one could deny it back inside the walls no matter what they tried to say. So when things start to go wrong on the expedition, like the right flank being quickly killed, they can’t retreat because going home empty-handed would mean they’d be forced to hand over Eren to be killed. And not only that, but from how fast it all happened (they can see how the black smoke signals are coming back), the titan following them is a lot faster than they are so if they turn back they’ll just get run down in open ground before they can even get back to the wall (this almost happened anyway with *normal* titans). It’s all or nothing now… and then the shit starts hitting the fan. The question is definitely still one of how many lives all of this is worth, but the options were *much* more limited for Erwin than you seem to think they were - there wasn’t more time or support available - and it’s amazing they even worked as well as they did, failing only on crazy edge cases that couldn’t have ever been predicted. Ultimately letting Eren and Mikasa fight Annie turned out to be the right answer. There's more to this, but whew is this already a lot.

Ooo boy, the youtube comments ain't gonna like this one lol. I agree that the second half of the season is weaker than the first, and tbh for me the problems began when they introduced the idea of human controlled titans. This series really didn't need to have any Shonen tropes(hero gains power of the evil they're fighting) and I think it suffers from it imo.

Rob Not

second half of the first season is definitely the weakest by far

Moons

I am so curious about what your opinion on S2 will be 👀 Everyone agrees that S3 onwards is amazing but the fandom is pretty split on S2. I personally love it and I think it’s miles better than S1. I liked it when it first aired but I liked it even more now because I think S2 adds so much to the characterisation, world building and overall mystery of the show (don’t expect to have all of your questions answered tho, S2 is only 12 episodes).

Zyrus

Your confusion is normal. Keep going, it really is the best story for a reason.

Moons

Oh and I just wanted to add that "seasons" in anime can be somewhat different from what you’re used to with western shows because good anime adaptations try to follow the source material by the letter. In this case, the source material is a serialised manga with chapters issued monthly (not following a seasonal structure). If anything, you can probably consider S1 to S3 being one "normal" season (story and tone-wise) and s4 being another one.

not_east

This show does not just spoonfeed explanations for things as they happen, many times the characters in the show have to earn the answers through their own fights, observations and sacrifices, hell they were about to get some info until Annie had the brilliant idea of sealing herself in a unbreakable cocoon.

Marco

It was the mystery that kept me watching my first time around !

wheatfat

I think it's interesting that what kept me watching is what's making you frustrated with the show. When I finished this season, I was desperate to know the answers to the questions you said you weren't finding that interesting anymore. The continuing reveals of twists and mostly-unintelligible information made me ask more and more questions and I loved that feeling, but it seems like you guys aren't enjoying it so much. Maybe it's just that I felt certain there were going to be satisfying answers and you don't seem confident of that. In any case, if I had to guess, that's why people kept watching. They wanted answers. That's what kept me going and I'm really glad it did. Looking forward to season two with you guys!

Frank Decker

Just stop watching If you guys don't enjoy the plot. It's just going to be more frustrating for you guys and your followers if you continue. You guys obviously don't get it. You guys obviously don't like the premise of the show, and you guys obviously don't think that it's capable of being a coherent show. So just stop watching it. That'd be better than getting an overly critical, snarky remark from Nerdy every minute by the minute. The only thing continuing to watch this series with this mindset is going to do is create a very divisive community on your channel. And sure, you'll have increased engagement( which personally I think it's really slimy if you guys are being disagreeable solely to drive more traffic to your channel, but I'll give you guys the benefit of the doubt) , but I promise you you guys will end up hating your job. You guys fundamentally don't like the show. So just stop watching it. simple as that. Sure people will be upset, but I reckon you guys will rub way more people the wrong way if you continue the series. Because I'll tell you right now, the whole premise of this show runs on mystery. It runs on both the main characters and the viewers being in the dark. If you don't feel satisfied with the answers you have now, you won't feel satisfied at the end of season 2. And the end season 3. And maybe even the end of season 4. So why bother?

nerdynightly

Why bother? Cause the first 13 episodes hooked the fuck out of me. I get being disappointed that I haven’t loved the second half of the season, but I’m still hoping to get back to that original feeling.

Stephen

Nerdy, as a huge fan of this show yes the end of season on is pretty bad. I will also say that the next season is where it gets really good and you start to get some answers, please just trust that the answers you seek are there

Crewe

I'm really glad you think so. I felt the same way as you at this point, but uve gotten through the worst part and the show rly does bring back that original feeling very well in S2

Mekar

This is one of those things where all of us are looking back at this as fans who have seen the show and going "but all of this is explained." And it is. However, I binged the first 3 seasons when I first watched the show. I didn't have to wait for many of these questions to be answered so I can understand how it would be very frustrating where you're sitting.

Khalayx

Maybe instead of a page instructing them not to watch the show you could just let them decide for themselves and not watch the reactions? Analysis doesn't always have to be a hype train.

Frank Decker

@Khalayx I like watching their reactions. Even the ones like this. And fair point, they obviously can watch whatever they want to watch. I just truly don't think they'll like season 2 if they couldn't handle the logic of the second half of season 1. Would honestly be happy to be proven wrong. I like when there's differing opinion, but the way they were nitpicking every little details by the minute just gave me a strong impression similar to me trying to force a friend who hates watching anime to watch anime. It feels like there's a fundemental disconnect (which could be caused by being too used to western media, but that's a whole other conversation).

Frank Decker

@NerdyNightly I see what you're saying, but the original feeling was created because anything was possible in the beginning and because you had NO/little information. The anime could have dropped a dragon into the mix by episode 1, and it wouldn't destroy your immersion into the show because the world building wasn't set in stone at the point. Somewhere after the first part of season 1, You had a strong idea of what the world was going to be like, and you were disappointed when the show's world building took a different path than what you had in mind. More specifically, it didn't make sense to you. My main point is that this process is going to continue to happen throughout every season. You're going to get to a point where you think you have a grasp on the show's world building, and then something is going to happen to bring you back in that same state of "WTF, that doesn't make sense". Even now, as someone who's caught up with the anime, I still have a ton of questions. The process itself isn't a bad thing, in fact I enjoy the way the show dispenses information(kind of like a 3 step forward, 2 step back modality). You'll get the "hook" again, I'm sure. But you'll also get the other side of it as well just as much. The side you didn't enjoy. With all that being said, I enjoy watching your reactions, regardless of how you guys react to the episodes. I think it's very fun to watch all the same.

olof

Season 1 is the worst season, imo. It's been so long since I watched it in its entirety that I had forgotten a lot of details.

Xaniss

That's the thing with attack on titan it takes FOREVER to answer your questions and it spoonfeeds it to you, but once it DOES tell you it does it SO WELL and it's very satisfying.

Xaniss

oh god you're starting to remind me of my sister, tho if she doesn't get answers quick she literally looks it up lol
