Wonderful reaction and some really good observations and criticism. I agree with y'all that the pilot is a stronger first episode (which is probably why fans consider it required watching and generally recommend it be watched first). I think it has a stronger focus on the characters which builds engagement a bit more and is honestly where the show really shines. I think Medrano's semi-canonical spinoff show, Helluva Boss, also demonstrates this well since it similarly is at its best when it focuses on its characters as well. Pure speculation here but if I had to make a guess for why they went the direction they did with the first episode, aside from the more obvious reason of not wanting to retread or repeat stuff established in the pilot for the already established fanbase (especially with the eight episode season putting tight limits for the pacing), it would be that a decision was made to onboard viewers with enough worldbuilding to understand the setting as quickly as possible. A lot of what we see in the first episode isn't immediately important in terms of the core cast and characters but is more of a quick sightseeing tour through the world itself, briefly seeing the breadth of the setting itself and the various factions/stakeholders involved so they all feel familiar when they're returned to in depth later or expanded on. It's an understandable creative choice in my opinion, especially if you're trying to maybe sell your creative vision of the show to executives or producer types, but I do think it has some unfortunate consequences to pacing and viewer investment in the core cast as a result. anyway holy shit did not mean to write this much like i said great video, love y'alls content and takes, and look forward to more!
