This was one of my favorite episodes! As a native Texan, it was great hearing about the Nueces Massacre. I hope you can have David Forbes on again to talk about right-winger sci-fi.

Damn, you're right. There are so many things we need to do. But yes, this should be a coming topic.

radiowarnerd

That's a great idea. There's an SF war anthology called (with great originality) There Will Be War. Maybe we could talk about that one.

I wish you guys would stop misconstruing Libertarian philosophy. Our entire philosophy hinges on the non-initiation of force. No Libertarian would ever say that it's OK to hang someone for drug use as long as it's done by a state rather than Washington. The reason we favor state control is that the more local the government, the more easy it is for you to influence it. It's fine if you don't like Ron Paul or Ayn Rand, but equating us with fascists (like in your Italian episode) or saying we are OK with totalitarian government as long as it's local is completely 100% wrong.

Salt probably could be a show in itself. One author offered that salt was a deciding factor in the conflict. With horses needing something like 5#/day and men needing 1#/day it was very strategic. The southern salt works were very high on the North's target list. The lack of salt had an effect akin to an engine running out of oil on man and beast. I am intrigued by the term "maroon" applied to the southern conflict. Having been schooled in the public system with the assistance of the big three TV networks, it was interesting introduction to the origin of a phrase one of my favorite cartoon characters uttered in derision. I offer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_Kh7nLplWo A little bit of Googling gave me "maroons, fugitives who had fled slavery and precariously settled within the dark recesses of the Great Dismal Swamp" http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/19/life-in-the-swamp/ "From all accounts, the first known Maroons to occupy and use this swamp as a place of concealment, a natural fortress, a liberated territory and a home were Amerindians. They were, sadly, escaping from the enslavement that had all but engulfed the eastern and southern sections of the continent. They were joined there by kinfolk and other Amerindians who had suffered defeats in wars with rival groups acting in league with European colonists." https://newafrikan77.wordpress.com/2016/07/04/the-real-resistance-to-slavery-in-amerikkka-russell-maroon-shoatz-pt-1/ "In his 1939 article “Maroons Within the Present Limits of the United States”, (historian) Herbert Aptheker stated that likely “about two thousand Negroes, fugitives, or the descendants of fugitives” lived in the Great Dismal Swamp, trading with white people outside the swamp. Results of a study published in 2007, “The Political Economy of Exile in the Great Dismal Swamp”, say that thousands of people lived in the swamp between 1630 and 1865, Native Americans, maroons and enslaved laborers on the canal (being built in the Swamp). A 2011 study speculated that thousands may have lived in the swamp between the 1600s and 1860." https://jubiloemancipationcentury.wordpress.com/2013/09/13/the-maroons-of-the-great-dismal-swamp/

You probably picked Turtledove's sanest ouvre to lol over, the man has put out several dictionary sized volumes of the following: 1. Confederacy wins Civil War in 1862, fifty years later the two nations join World War 1 on opposite sides, thousands of pages later an nuclear bomb gets dropped on Richmond but it is too late to save 6 million blacks from being gassed with Cyclone B :( 2. Space aliens invade during World War 2 they are completely fucking terrible
