I think the kids at the diner listening in was a callback to the first film when the other inmates at the jail are listening in on the ghostbusters figuring out Gozer’s return at the high rise. The 2016 film should be burned and anyone who missed it should consider themselves lucky. There are a lot of talented people who worked on it but it felt like a cash grab to keep the IP alive for the studio and the changes didn’t feel organic or earned … and more importantly we’re not funny or fun (though of course that is subjective). Whereas this film, helmed by the original director’s son (Jason Reitman who has made other good films), felt like it truly carried the spirit of the franchise (pun slightly intended). The only thing missing for me was to have said not only “For Harold” but also “and Ivan”.
