In the anime Nami's family relationships were setup a lot better. There was a big focus on the fact that they're family even tho they're not actually related etc, so when Nami's Mom said she had two daughters it was because she couldn't bring herself to deny her daughters as family, especially not with them listening. Doesn't make it smart, but it's human This arc was condensed quite a lot, and Nami's backstory in the anime is a bit different, better developed and hits a lot harder, but they still did a really good job here and I'm super happy with it. Loving your reactions!

His reaction was kinda funny considering it was "worse" in the anime lol cause Arlong was already leaving, when Bellemere yelled after him that what she paid for was actually for her 2 daughters...but yeah I definitely agree that the Arlong Park Arc hit harder in the anime.

Regarding the Civil War analogy, yes One Piece actually does touch on subjects such as slavery, etc. over the course of the story. The portrayal of Arlong here is accurate and, without saying too much, that whole dynamic will be explored in later seasons. Fun fact: In the original material, the villagers were aware of Nami's deal w/Arlong and sacrifice the whole time, but left her in the dark so she could give up on her plan without being burdened by their expectations. And it wasn't losing the $10mil that led to her mental breakdown – she was actually considering to just start over again – but scar guy telling her she has already done too much for them & the villagers marching to Arlong Park knowing that would be their sure death. The desperation during the whole self mutilation scene also hit a lot more harder (but I understand why they didn't wanna go full graphic here). Same with the Arlong Park Walk and its legendary theme – hell episode 37 is what made most of us fall in love with OP – while here it felt lowkey awkward. Nonetheless, apart from this, I have really enjoyed this adaptation, despite its many changes, so far. Glad you two are enjoying it as well!

Are you going to do a Watchalong for the anime? Would be dope!

Loved the reaction! I would like to add that some of the things in the LA might not hit hard emotionally just because in the anime/manga it takes numerous chapters to flesh out each character and that justifies their reactions in the show so yeah in the LA somethings gonna get left out for sure. Also its been a while I cant remember but I think in the anime Luffy doesnt know anyhting about Nami's past he just helps her cause she asks for it (correct me if im wrong) Also about the Zoro and Sanji thing I feel like in the aime you understand more why they go at each other and its honestly one of my fav things in the anime. Zoro is the more cautious type to Luffy's happy go lucky attitude and thats why I love their relationship cause Zoro is always cautious of who joins the crew tends to not trust them and in a way keeps Luffy in check as the first mate of the captain. He will share his opinions etc but at the end he will do as luffy says cause he has complete faith in him. I love that dynamic! and for some reason I like Sanji in the LA better than in the anime so far. One more thing i would like to add is that as one piece goes on you will see lot of political issues being raised and real world problems. The show keeps on getting deeper as it moves on so you guys will definitely see more darker deeper stuff as the story continues. It isnt a 1000+ chapter manga for not reason lol

2023-09-09 11:21:01 Yeah in the manga & anime, he makes point of not caring about his crew's past and it only matters to him who they are rn...so he actually went out of his way to not hear her backstory. He simply did beat tf out of Arlong because Nami was his friend and needed his help – nothing more, nothing less. Though I had some issues with the execution of this last arc (unlike the rest of the LA) , that they also touched on a bit in their review at the end, I understand why it was done like this. I don't know if you have seen Oda's recent interview with the NY Times but there he talks about how – despite being amazed by what gem of a casting Iñaki was – he realized that this LA could and would need a slighty different take on Luffy and adjusted scenes accordingly.

yeah i remember it now. And I agree with you but its LA and they have a limited budget so I understand they cant add everything in 8 episodes while keeping the quality. ANd no i did not read it but I see what Oda is saying i feel that way too. Hopefully this attracts more people to watch the anime or read the manga cause its just sooo good and if they enjoyed this they would love the actual source.
