Mohanlal movies to watch and why- 1) Vanaprastham- Acting that is beyond all comparison. Deeply layered story. Premiered in Cannes. His best work as an actor, in my opinion. 2) Iruvar- His debut Tamil movie. Probably the best work on Mani Ratnam. One of the rare instances where Mohanlal, known for his natural style of acting, goes method. 3) Sadayam- Powerful writing by MT Vasudevan Nair(probably the best writer in Malayalam, and not just screenplay writing). A very disturbing story and scary ending. 4) Thazhvaram- Another masterpiece by Bharathan, known for his craft in the visual language. Again, written by MT. A Malayalam (successful) attempt at Spaghetti Western that ruled. 5) Amrithamgamaya- 3 phases of life, effortlessly pulled off by Mohanlal when he was 29. The more you think about this movie, the more it surprises us. The way his body is adapted to 3 completely different phases of a man is absolutely phenomenal. 6) Kireedam- The movie that made all of us cry. 7) Chenkol- A supremely underrated sequel to Kireedam. It does falter a bit in the story side, compared to its predecessor, but when it comes to performances, it surpasses Kireedam. 8) Manichithrathazhu- Probably the most popular Malayalam cinema ever. Ana average Malayali would have watched this movie more than 5 times. It's funny and thrilling. It was remade to all major Indian languages. Just a list to get started. Appreciating Mohanlal might require some getting used to. As in, he is always a subtle performer. As most of his contemporaries say, "he acts as if someone is shooting with a hidden camera". So when you see him in a scene with other actors, you might feel that the rest are 'performing', while he is just being a guy. The Complete Actor thing is something that fans endowed on him and he adapted. Like Rajnikanth with "Superstar", Kamal Hassan with "Universal Star". Mohanlal's own justification to that title is- "I am not a complete actor. But that is my meditation and my aim"

When I first saw the trailer I thought it was a fan made trailer. Maybe that's the point...its fan service. Mohanlal was really good in Bro daddy though. In a lighter fun role.

Thank you for narrowing it down. When they said suggest a few good movies it was like a barrage of memories in my mind. I would add Thoovanathumpikal and Namuku parkaan munthiri thoppukal to the list just because how ahead of time those were.
