Hey Jaby, this leaving a part of a subject is common here while preparing for IIT. Its because, the content is so huge, no one scores that much. And by spending more time on the ones which you're better at, you'll not be doing a disservice to yourself.

Well something that u did not quite grasp is the 'optimisation' theme. Engineering competitive exams not just test ur concepts but also ur time management and putting ur strengths to best use. For example: someone good at rote can slay in the inorganic section and score there while a logical mind can target and score in the physics section. The exam is all about choosing and solving and smart work rather than hard work. Thats a skill u need in ur non academic practical life or job. Hence not much emphasis is laid on subject wise 'individual passing mark'.

I know the nuances are lost and we don't have the concept of "coaching classes" in America but the place they are attending is not a school. It's an institute where students attend to prepare for entrance/admission test akin to our MCAT or SAT or LSAT. Most people who recommend this don't understand that an average American has no idea what a coaching class is.

True. IIT JEE is entrance exam for getting into IIT (BEST ENGINEERING COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY)

I think for him to understand that, someone needs to first explain what IIT entrance tests are and what these guys are doing. Jaby/Achara if you guys read, IITs are a group of universities in India which are considered to by far the best engineering colleges in the country. For a long time, until 2008, there were only 7 of these colleges in India and in 2014, the acceptance rate was 0.7%. So naturally, Indian parents being indian parents, start pushing their kids to give the IIT entrance exams, now this created a demand for teachers who would tutor these kids and that's how these IIT "coaching classes" were born. These are not technically schools. Your average indian kid goes to school and then has coaching classes after school. Kota is the epicenter of coaching class business in India. Kids come here or more accurately are sent here to prepare solely for entrance tests for Medicine, IIT with aim to hope and get into medicine or one of the 23 IITs that now exist .

I think what was missed is the fact that "skipping" Inorganic chemistry here is referring to "skipping the preparation for it in IIT JEE", which is only 11% of the entire question paper. Obviously the student would learn the "normal" level of inorganic chemistry to pass the 12th grade. But the level of preparation needed for IIT JEE is at a completely different level than what 12th grade. If the top 1000 ranks in IIT JEE can only solve 40% of the question paper, it is better to focus on the 89% than can be "optimized" than to attempt the 11%. That's why the episode is called "optimization" (basically optimizing the time and effort to give the maximum benefit)..

That seems like a good explanation. It's hard to grasp some of the inside stuff mentioned in the show without having studied the CBSE and JEE curriculums. However, I can understand where Jaby is coming from. I was also one of the students who did not like leaving out portions that I could not understand and had to get "everything right". That serves well in high school exam setting but goes against you in a competitive exam setting where exam strategy is as important (if not more) as content knowledge

Agreed that there's a lot of context that's missed out and I know a couple of other videos where the same problem arises. However, I think it's interesting that they shared their own experiences. What happens is that those aware of the nitty gritty details of the system will be able to appreciate the show better as they can relate to it. One of the reasons why Jaby and his team reacts to different kind of videos though is because he is interested in understanding the Indian culture better. This show at least gives an overview of how stressful and competitive it is to get into one of the IITs.
