For more powerful dramas like My Name Is Khan you can react to: UDAAN (2010) about a teen and abusive father, often considered by critics as one of the best Hindi movies of the 2010s AWAARA (1951) directed by the legend Raj Kapoor (Rishi's father, Ranbir & Kareena's grandfather), also with him as lead, his real life father Prithviraj playing his father, and Nargis (Sanjay Dutt's mother) as female lead. The movie is among the few Indian classics to have received international recognition. Jaby should see it as he is among the reactors who have a specific interest in the technical aspect of filmmaking. MERA NAAM JOKER (1970) also by and with Raj Kapoor. Partly autobiographical, it's about an old clown narrating his 3 failed love stories. 4 hours long! Rishi made his acting debut in the first part of the movie when the protagonist is a teen and falls in love for the 1st time. It's absolutely a must watch. Raj Kapoor was unbelievably in advance on his time. Jaby should see this one too. MISSION KASHMIR (2000) with Hrithik (that's the year he debuted), Sanjay Dutt,Preity Zinta and Jackie Shroff. A very moving drama that is focused on people rather than politics (it never preaches or tries to make a political point). IMO it's written with a lot of nuance and hit the nail on the head for many things. EARTH (1998) directed by Deepa Mehta, part of her "elements trilogy" where each movie talks about a social issue. Here it's religion/politics just before partition. Aamir Khan in a rare "negative" role so you might be interested if only for that. It's a renowned movie. OMG 2 (2023) I think it's Achara and Kristen who watched the first movie recently. This one is one of my favs of last year, it's a must watch. It's not about religion per se but about sex ed, sex taboos & conservatism.
