I love the whole setup for this because Catra only was in that situation to begin with because she wasn't able to do that to Shadow Weaver. Really glad that baggage didn't misfire in the completely wrong direction.

I recommend going back and listening carefully to what Entrapta says will happen if they open a portal. It helps going into the next episode.

The worst part is that argument is the last time Angella and Glimmer ever speak to each other. What comes out the other side of that portal will never really be Glimmer again...

'If there is a whole episode where it was just 'Catra no!', it was probably this episode' I mean, it also has a bit of 'Glimmer no!' just to provide some variety. Its interesting to think about - what if Glimmer had not gone to Shadow Weaver and teleported into the Fright Zone right away. You picked up on the use of shadows in this episode. First Angella is in the shadows while Glimmer is standing in the light, indicating Angella is letting her past cloud her judgement. But then Glimmer is depicted as stepping into the shadows, indicating that maybe rushing into the Fright Zone like that was not such a good idea either. It turns out, if you imagine a scenario where Glimmer didn't invade the Fright Zone like she did, Catra likely wouldn't have opened the portal. Glimmer's actions led to Catra's confrontation with Shadow Weaver, which pushed Catra to the brink of an emotional breakdown. And then Entrapta inadvertendly triggered the breakdown with the words 'Adora was right'. The only reason Catra went to Entrapta in the first place is because of Glimmer and Shadow Weaver invading the Fright Zone. Without Glimmer, Entrapta would likely have been able to warn Hordak without issue, Hordak would've postponed the Portal opening, and Catra wouldn't have been in such a state as to try to open it herself.

It's not just that the sound is cool, but it's LOUD, followed by a cut to silence. Adds a ton of emphasis, especially because no other episode cuts to black like that.

Can confirm for D&D and other RPG games: Players ALWAYS send things sideways, and you have to adapt quickly or everything grinds to a halt. Plenty of times stuff I'd established for "atmosphere" suddenly became "foreshadowing" to find a non-ham-handed way to get things back, if not on-track, at least to within what I HAD mapped out (roughly).

One time as I was setting up for the dramatic finale, my BBEG got the McGuffin and was about to do the thing I'd been setting up for a YEAR, and one of my players used the Wand of Wonder (which I forgot I gave to him as a joke like 20 sessions ago) on it and rolled at 63. Now technically RAW says that it's the DM's choice as to what gets teleported, and I'd already established that the McGuffin was basically as powerful as a fucking Infinity Stone, so it wouldn't have been unreasonable of me to say that it didn't work the way the player wanted. But the goddamn EXCITEMENT at the table! Everyone was so thrilled that this batshit thing was about to happen and I just couldn't take that from them. So, even though that's not how any of this works, both the boss and the magic quest item get sent to the Ethereal Plane and I spent the next week rewriting the entire ending to take place in a different dimension. And I'd do it again.

If Catra being abused for her entire life and learning that she almost died because Shadow Weaver manipulated her to go back to Adora wasn't enough for her to pull the switch, her seeing the people who are supposed to be "the good guys" holding hands and attacking her with the person that abused her her entire life was the tipping point. It's obviously not even close to the right decision, but seeing everything Catra went through, we can see why she does ultimately pull the switch.
