Hey folks! Due to the availability of the cast and crew, it's been a while since we have been able to get cameras rolling on my upcoming short film 'Before He Wakes'. But this past weekend, we wrote, we planned and we conquered. The day went really really well. Today was another day with just our lead actress on camera doing a couple of re-shoots, pick-ups and some cut-aways and transition shots. Thankfully since it has been a while since we last shot, it means that I have been able to comb through all the footage that we currently have, put together some rough cuts of scenes and find out how it flows. Using that knowledge we can add a few one-shot scenes, do some ADR (the process when the actor watches themselves on screen and record some dialogue or sound effects; like grunts in fight scenes) and also know where the films strengths are and lean more into that. The highlight of the day, however, was shooting what I intend to be the last shot of the film. A one-take closing scene that will (fingers crossed) give the film a strong final note. We also shot a scene-transition that took about 2 hours to set up due to the ambition of it on such a small scale (our head-of-lighting and head of make-up kept telling me how they didn't know how to make it work..but my gosh did we do it). 5 seconds of screen-time but it's a blessing to the edit and the film's pace. Plus it looks really cool. Also, about a week ago our brilliant composer started sending me a steady-stream of tracks for the film's score. I know that music is important to a film, but it can't be over-stated how drastic the change can be when you go from the raw footage to the colour-corrected, aspect ratio-appropriate cut with music. It really brings it to life. There is still more to do and one more full day of shooting to go. But hopefully we can arrange that soon and get this project over the finish line. Thanks again for your continued patronage to support this humble production and more screenshots and behind-the-scenes images to share as I go through this weekend's footage.
