tbh ussop's cowardice is probably one of the biggest causes of division in the OP fanbase. Some people hate it, some find it funny, and others think it makes him more relatable than the "monster trio" (luffy, zoro, & sanji). Personally I think it just gives him more room to grow as a character, but it can definitely go too far and become annoying at times.
