I wonder what the cost of each SM-2 is? Maybe we should develop a cost reduced interceptor--like a Sea Sparrow ER, and save the Standard Missiles for the "big one."

Pretty sure that’s already done. 4x ESSM can fit in single standard VLS cell. I would imagine they would carry a high/low mix for exactly the reasons you mentioned (as well as increasing number of missiles carried)
