First, lol. This will help me miss a few deadlines today.

I had heard that the DL in DLG stood for Destroyer Leader, because these ships had spaces designated for a squadron leader, etc. and staff aboard.

Newport News Shipbuilding also is the only shipyard to build our Carriers.

“When the 5 inch gun is overkill, use the 20 mm” had me rolling

I was like, "Wow, I can't believe Aaron is allowed to talk about this." And then I realised it's the cruiser, not the sub.

Two questions...Why do we never produce twin mounted gun systems like other nations? When did VLS systems start and why did we not install them in these ships?

I recall it was suppose to act as a lead, sorta like what you said. Which was different than the smaller DE or Destroyer Escorts, like the Knox class. What made it more confusing was that these DLs were the size of most cruisers, yet were called Frigates referring to US tradition. This lead to the infamous "Cruiser Gap", in which Russians used different standards for their cruisers, and it was a bit of a media snafu making the US Navy look weak, even though they tried to show that gap didn't exist. Most DEs got re classed as Destroyer (DD) and most DLs got reclassed as Cruisers. This is also why the Ticonderoga class became a CG instead of the planned DDG designation. I gotta admit, while I think the politics was silly, it did lead to a more understandable US Navy designation system, for the most part.

i have always been partial to the soviet designed warships during the cold war, such as the udaloy, kara, slava, etc. But these earlier american cold war warships will also have that place in my heart, fantastic video as always, looking foreward to the next one!

The M61 has a rate of fire of 6,000 rpm. There is no need for two of them. Two barrels is twice the weight. Why do that if you can achieve a sufficiently high rate of fire in just one barrel? VLS came about with the Ticonderogas and Arleigh Burkes, so the late 80's I guess. Upgrading a ship build before VLS to be VLS is likely more expensive than simply building a whole new ship. The Virginias in particular weren't going to have a very long life to begin with given the excessive operating costs associated with nuclear propulsion, so pointless to upgrade them in any costly way.

Can't think of any time where a 5" is overkill. We've used them against IRGN and Somali pirate speedboats and aircraft.

And its a totally retired class. So long as he only talks about the ship in general and not specifics about any sensitive system I think he's fine.

I kinda meant the 5inch turret. Why not twin guns?

Weight. Gun armament is a secondary consideration at most on US ships. Every time a new class of ships comes out there is talk of deleting the offensive guns altogether. No need for more than one tube.

The elevator design was bad, from the get-go. Specially the hatch design that covered the elevator, and would have been an easy fix. By just redesigning it.
