This is the Special Mission Sub that would dock with KS-86 Project 675N.  Something I lost in the translation of  my Echo II Sub Brief is this is not for Special Forces as much as this is for deep diving special missions.

The Paltus would be carried off the coast to Norway and they would locate sub-oceanic communications cable and plant charges on them.  Practice cutting them.  Or move them.  In 1995, I watched a Yankee-class SSBN (Modified) do this for about 6 weeks.  Very boring for us, but we had to keep an eye (ear) on them.

One man's "boring" is another man's "HOLY BALLS that's fascinating, what the hell were they doing? Did you get footage of it? Can I have any of it? Can you tell me more stories about it?" (and 12000 other questions....) :)

I believe you said in the Briefing it was battery powered?

Paltus class (in Russia known as Project 1851 Almaz & Project 18511, NATO code name X-Ray) submarines were powered by a single 10 MW nuclear reactor.
