Here is an early Sub Briefing I did on the Kilo class.  This is old and may not be as good as my more recent work.

117 DB at 1 yard... "How we got that measurement, is none of your darn business" LMAO, I love it.

Capt Turkey: Please reorganize the tags on your posts to better facilitate finding specific types of posts such as sub briefs. I was trying to find the Gottland brief and gave up because of how slow my browser gets just clicking "more posts" in Patreon over and over.

Hey jive do you the purpose of theses boats are more local defense of harbors and ports and such since even with the endurance of something like a 212 just creeping around or even sitting at the bottom would make very hard to find for a "hostel" trying to do some sneaky breekior do you think these guysys are gonna be out and about maybe even intercepting carrier strike group it might not be able to keep up with it but right place right time they can still listen in on a bunch sorry if the question is too vague thanks for the briefings have a good day

7:00 "and a laser range finder was DETECTED on the periscope." I'm guessing this falls into the "none of your dammit business how we know that" category.

I don't see your old Shang Class one. Was that removed because for quality control of an older video or did China complain to youtube and get it taken down? :p

Anonymous

tbh its paterons fault not Jives, to see older content is very difficult though I agree

subbrief

I had made a mistake about the Shang Class so I took it down. I want these to be perfect.

Thanks Jive. I appreciate your dedication to doing your best.

If all sub briefs were under a unified tag though it would be easier. 30 posts instead of 230 or whatever.

Thanks Jive!

Hi Jacob, I think you got a great point here let my support this with a short story. Way back in 2001 a little flotilla of two German Subs and the Replenishment Ships A1418 Meersburg went over the Pond, for SUBEX 01 to traine with and against the US Navy. at this exercise U 24 sank the USS Enterprise CVN-65 Simulator of course! And they were the first just to achieve this but not the last ( Gotland, italian 212A maybe others too). So to your point when a 500t coastal Sub with just 8 torpedoes pull this of, a 4000t Kilo could probably do it too.

I wanna know 117dB at what frequency.

I'm kind of surprised Russia continues to develop diesel boats despite their very capable nuclear fleet. Is this mainly to keep up fleet numbers more cheaply? Curious to better understand the relevance of SSKs in the nuclear era.

Anonymous

I'm no expert, but I think that SSKs like the Kilo excel at shallow water ops - places like the Barents Sea, Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and Mediterranean where Russia is exerting influence. Cost is certainly a factor, and these subs have land strike capability as well if Russia needs it. They also have ports near those areas so don't need endurance/time on station to execute their missions.

they are quieter....

When the figure "117 dB" was quoted, is this relative to a reference level of 1 uPa? Wikipedia tells me the usual reference levels are 20 uPa in air, 1 uPa in water.

SSKs are quick and cheap to build in many cases and the kilo will be used to bulk out the fleet basically a force multiplier
