Two engines fall off a Boeing 747, just moments after takeoff from Amsterdam. The pilots fight desperately for control, as their aircraft struggles to stay aloft. To make matters worse, they don’t even know that their engines have literally detached from the wing.

Beneath them, residents of Amsterdam watch on in horror, as the stricken jumbo limps back towards the airport. Will the pilots make it, or will time run out before they can wrangle their massive jet back to the airport? This is the story of El Al cargo flight 1862.

Jeez, that was terrifying watching the plane helpless crashing into the ground :( Such a tragic and avoidable incident

I'm curious if you think whether the ground crew had any secondary responsibility for neglecting to detect the cracks and whether the problems with the plane's previous flight may have hinted at the deeper problem.

I'm not sure whether those issues with the previous flight in would have been telling re the fault that ended up occurring. But these were microscopic cracks, so the ground crew could not have seen them. Maintenance engineers though - they may have been able to spot them. Ultimately, though, it appears to have been a Boeing issue - they didn't use a strong enough metal for those components
