Days before Christmas, in 2022, a United Airlines Boeing Triple seven careens towards the ocean, just seconds after takeoff from Hawaii. Alarms blare in the cockpit, but the pilots are utterly confused as to what is happening. Will they be able to pull their massive plane out of its terrifying dive, or is it already too late, for them, and their 271 passengers?

This is a story of confusion, distraction, and above all, it’s a story about what can happen when our expectations don’t match reality. This is the story, of United Airlines flight 1722.

One point worth mentioning is that the big difference in pitch between the Boeing’s and Airbus flight by wire is that in normal flight law the Airbus has path stability, and the Boeing has speed stability.

When you release side stick in the Airbuses the airplane maintains path, as you perfectly explained, if you do so in the Boeing, the airplane tries to stabilize at the speed you have selected with the trim in a similar way than a conventional plane. In the Airbus you don’t have to trim. It looks this is something to consider to understand the human factor involved in this incident.
