This tragedy was so heartbreaking from the start. The way in which you covered what the authorities had discovered. Along with how woefully inadequate the airline industry is to this day. On a personal note, it brought me back to nine years old. When my best friend returned from a family vacation she was very much looking forward to. So I of course called the second I knew she was home. Rather than the usual routine of me getting a ride to hear all about her summer vacation. She asked to come to me. The second both I and my mom saw her I rushed her up to my room. Seems upon the beginning of their descent they suddenly found themselves enclosed in a dark thunderstorm. They plummeted 10k feet in seconds. The air masks dropped of course. Then my friend grabbed the puke bag and scribbled a goodbye note to me. After hearing this I was stunned, her pilots were able to regain control and land safely, but still… Then she handed me the note. Which I treasure to this day. We were nine. And had been friends since we met on day one of nursery school. I’ve never been so terrified by a close call in my life that far. (She also swiped the yellow piece. Even terrified herself, she knew to take proof of this. It was her show and tell first week back.) And that level of thinking ahead is precisely what bonded us day one. By seventh grade the teachers all just gave up trying to ‘get’ us. Every year we searched that handbook like we were lawyers. Looking for every loophole we could find. I mean it’s not our fault nobody had thought to put, no gambling, in an elementary school handbook. So what ‘rule’ exactly did I break? That was first grade, you can see why if a teacher found us in their class, by high school muttered “Fuck!”* *It was near enough to the Boston area that teachers who’d swear, were not uncommon and as a student, hilarious.
