Great reaction Bob, cant wait for Black On Both Sides! I would recommend Talib Kweli's Quality. Its his first album and its fire

Livin Legin

That’s false bro his first album is reflection eternal also called train of thought and is a classic way doper than quality 💯 I used to bump dat album relentlessly and the features are dope too Mos Def, Kool G Rap, Xzibit, Rah Digga and others and DJ Hi Tek on the production one of the illest producers ever imo 💯

Livin Legin

Talib Kweli Reflection Eternal Train of Thought album is a classic with all tracks produced by DJ Hi Tek and Mos Def Black on Both Sides album is one of the best albums ever. Reflection Eternal Train of Thought album came out in 2000 and Mos Def Black on Both Sides came out in 99 🔥🔥💯💯

Second this recommendation, the Train of Thought is definitely where you should go next with Kweli, especially considering how much you loved the production on Respiration (agreed btw, in my top 10 hip hop songs of all time) Hi-Tek is so underrated.

Your Aqib Talib/Talib Kweli comments remind me of a line on the extra track off JIDs The Forever Story, hope you get a chance to hear it soon :)

Christian

ooh this is a good one

To your point on Kweli’s flow… it can throw you off for a little until you get used to it because his flow is definitely unorthodox and he sometimes sounds like his flow is off but it’s all intentional

SlumpJones

So in regards to your comments about Mos’ verse and Drake’s lyrics. I think Jay-Z has a lyric that most aptly explains the difference. This is off his song “Moment of Clarity” “If skills sold truth be told I'd probably be lyrically Talib Kweli Truthfully I want to rhyme like Common Sense (But I did five Mil) I ain't been rhyming like Common since” Artists like Mos, Kweli, Common and the like are incredibly skilled and phenomenal with the wordplay but that isn’t what generates sales. Drake is the type of artist who makes good music but it’s shallow as hell

bobthepoppop

Oh, right... I knew that was familiar, but it'd been a long time since I heard that name

If nothing new drops in January that is worth reacting to, Forever Story is on deck 👍

Loved the reaction Bob! I’ve been advocating for Black on Both Sides since I found your channel and this just makes me more excited for when you get around to it. This album (and others) changed my life as it helped open my eyes to power structures in society and led me on a path to studying social sciences. It was great seeing what lines/themes resonated with you and hearing you breakdown the lyrics. I picked up some new perspectives on the album. Interesting that people are recommending Be as Common’s magnus opus. It’s a great album but the debate in my circle is always between Resurrection and Like Water For Chocolate. I personally love Like Water For Chocolate with J Dilla’s production edging it for me. Either way, I’m keen to see you react to some Common regardless of what album. Excited for Food and Liquor next week! Lots of lyrics to get stuck in to

Eh, it might be intentional, but I think it's generally a weakness in (especially) his early works. I don't think it's a case of not being able to rap fast, just that he has a tendency to cram a syllable or two more into his lines than what works for the flow. Great lyricist, but he's not perfect.

Like Water for Chocolate is definitely my fave Common LP
