Good Friday Mixtape https://youtu.be/Ptbqn-7VJUk These are songs Kanye released every Friday leading up to the album. It was a alot of fun to experience this. Official Music Videos Runaway - Full-length Film https://youtu.be/Jg5wkZ-dJXA This is a short-film directed by Kanye covering all the songs on the album. Power https://youtu.be/L53gjP-TtGE This is one of my favourite Kanye videos. Beautiful and thematically on-point. All of the Lights https://youtu.be/HAfFfqiYLp0 Lost in the World https://youtu.be/ofaRvNOV4SI Live Performances Coachella 2011 (Full Performance) Kanye performs MBDTF and earlier songs here. If you just want to see certain songs, a user posted timestamps below. I like just jumping around the video and seeing one amazing song after another. What Kanye song isn't a welcome surprise? Runaway - Live on SNL https://streamable.com/gn433c This performance isn't available on YouTube. But it's one of my favourites. The choreography and staging is beautiful. Must see. Yooooo! Excited for this! Since you mentioned the headphones and it's the next album why not revisist yeezus (could be a patron exclusive). Especially as you have built up a greater understand of Kanye and hip-hop in general! 2ouls be interested to see if you have any new takes. As always love the vids

looking dapper bob 👌

Oliver Hed

You really need to look at a lot of these lyrics as metaphors for fame and celebrity. Especially for example the verses in All of the Lights, they’re pretty much completely metaphorical

Oliver Hed

I really hope you live with this album for a few days and really think of the lyrics (obviously not every single one) as metaphors for fame, celebrity and how easy it is to lose it even when you’re at the top.

Paul Salvador Estrada

Kanye is funny as hell hes just got a super Dry sense of humor. Like sahara desert dry.

Anonymous

This motherfucker is the exact motherfucker I wanted!

FuzzyDunlop

I think you might like the accompanying film..it's 30 min i think.

Anonymous

Rumor has it that Kanye mixed All of the Lights over 100 times.

I once saw Sweeney do 50 slow handstand push-ups

A thing to note is after the Taylor Swift incident “Power” was the first single for this album. So many people were expecting a remorseful and sincere apology with it…. And he opens with “I'm living in that 21st century Doing something mean to it Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it I guess every superhero need his theme music” It was truly a sight to behold

Anonymous

Great video. I'd reccomend listening to "Woods" by Bon Iver, it's the song Kanye samples on Lost in the World

Anonymous

Great reaction, always enjoy seeing your perspective. As for the annotations, they're not always the greatest, but it does help to...y'know, read them, not skim 3 words and then say "whatever" :)

Anonymous

Glad you loved devil in a new dress. My all time favorite Kanye track.

CRASH

Only on Power so far but I wonder if you’ll enjoy the album more when it’s playing without pauses or stopping to analyze.

Anonymous

Great video, when replaying the album and and analyzing it on future listens I'd recommend remembering the album title and how it might tie into the album context, it's themes, lyrics and even the sound of the album.

Anonymous

you should definitely check out king crimsons itcotck it is a masterpiece

Anonymous

If you didn’t notice already a lot of the things Kanye talked about manifested into real life like when he says he’s gonna marry a pornstar, the inevitable divorce, and not being able to see his daughters, which is an unfortunate situation going on in his life right now.

Anonymous

LETS GOOO

Anonymous

Watch the Throne, the collab with Jay Z comes after this album btw. Hope you react to that one as well!

FuzzyDunlop

You're gonna get a lot of feedback on this, and chances are they'll get everything right, I'm gonna step back on this one.

Psykopomp

you loving devil in a new dress is based af

Anonymous

so appalled and devil in a new dress are my favorite Kanye songs on any album Watch the throne is a must reaction if you want more Kanye and jay z

Anonymous

Great reaction, but you definitely gotta go back to those first 3 tracks and give them another chance. Dark Fantasy is the best hip hop opener of all time, imo. Gorgeous has some of Kanye's best verses of all time. Power is one of Kanye's all time best hits. TLOP is my favorite album of all time, so I'm looking forward to your reaction.

----

idk the beat for devil in a new dress reminds of a medieval castle like a resident evil mansion and kanyes just roaming around. dracula vibes

Anonymous

I think TLOP is kind of a weird one for first-time listeners. The music is great, but I feel like a lot of my enjoyment of the album was heightened from how huge of a spectacle it was. It was such an iconic moment in pop culture at the time that some of it might not be so well received on a visit from someone who's completely detached and didn't live through it. Maybe I'm wrong though and you'll love it just as much as the rest of us for what it is. Just gonna have to wait and see

Paul Salvador Estrada

Gotta Google "Amber Rose"s fine ass lol she was his main squeeze during this album and is the girl whos voice is heard in dark fantasy and blame game

Psykopomp

the cello and piano throughout make this album so fucking beautiful. changed how i listen music when it came out. i started picking out individual instruments instead of hearing music as a wall of sound. made me appreciate music on a different level.

Anonymous

TLOP is my favorite album of all time, but it is definitely a pretty chaotic album, and you're right in that TLOP was a moment in hip hop. Still, I think the album stands as a classic, with many of Kanye's best tracks, and interesting themes woven together as a chaotic masterpiece. I agree though that he might have a tougher time really clicking with it at first.

FuzzyDunlop

He definitely gets the fishstick joke, it's hilarious to me that so many people don't see he plays right into it in that clip even.

Anonymous

Also worth noting IMO how Kanye himself views this album, he always described it in a rather artificial way, this is the only album he described he felt like he "had" to make instead of wanted to make, yet also the closest thing to perfection he felt he could ever produce, and the thing with Kanye is he kind of hates perfection, and hates appealing to people's expectations of how he should act and what he should make, yet this album is sort of an "apology" album from him, to the fans and the haters, this album is what made non-rap fans see Kanye as great, and what made hip hop fans know Kanye still got it, and what he's truly capable of. And i think this is why he followed up with Yeezus, because like he says on that album, "as soon as they like you, make 'em unlike you", and that's basically Kanye's whole ethos.

Anonymous

Best album reaction ever

Tribecalledjoe

I like to look at TLOP almost as if you had a bunch of paint cans laid out and each one was labeled different eras of Kanye like one would be '03-'06 Kanye and another '07-'10 Kanye and another '10-'13 Kanye and you just at random splashed them onto a canvas. Its probably gonna sound abit messy and all over the place at first I know it did for about the first year of me listening to it but its easily become one of my favorites! A great collection of tracks

Anonymous

Some interesting note about the song Runaway and the album in general. The women he is referring to in the song is actually Fame, he does this throughout the entire album. Devil in a new dress, all of the lights and so on, he uses women as metaphors for fame. When viewing the album through this lens it completely changes the listening experience. Runaway was his apology record after the Taylor swift incident, Kanye is acknowledging his flaws, his tendencies to be all of the nouns he uses in the the chorus. Also, Kanye specifically asked Pusha-T to write his verse from the perspective of an asshole, this is to juxtapose the compassion Kanye shows throughout the song, the person he could be or once was but now apologetic. Perhaps the most interest part to me is the inaudible second half of the song which repeats the pre chorus and chorus of the first half but it is now muffled and indiscernible. The goal of this was to transform his voice into a musical instrument that allows him to express himself abstractly, unconfined by words. But you may ask yourself why? you see, Kanye is now speaking to us directly attempting to apologise for his past behaviour, attempting to show compassion and vulnerability but all that we hear is inaudible vocal nonsense. All this is done to show how the words sound like in his head (first half) and how they actually sound to everyone else (second half). His message is lost, he’s unable to accurately vocalise his thoughts and convey what he truly means, something he has struggled with his entire career and landed him in trouble a few times. After a year of exile of torrential public backlash, suicidal thoughts and wavering emotions Kanye returned and performed this song at the VMA’s in 2010, the same stage he infamously stole the mic from Taylor a year earlier. I highly recommend that performance. He didn’t back down, he didn’t run away, he faced the moment head on and used art as his weapon of choice. This album is truly one of the magnopuses of hip hop and I’d argue music itself ‘The Sistine chapel approach to hip hop’ There’s incredible levels and layers to each songs production and lyrics. Kanye said specifically about the song power: “we spent 5,000 hours writing and it’s really psychology behind the lyrics” Lastly on a personal note I would just like to say Runaway is my favourite song of all time, it’s helped me soo much in moment of darkness and happiness, I would often sit and listen to it with my eyes closed after a tough day and it has been therapeutic for me throughout my life. I know this was a long comment but this album means the world for me, all in all I would rate it 6/10 ;) Thank you for the reaction bob!

Anonymous

just gottra say bob's visceral reaction to raekwon's verse got me beyond hyped for 36 chambers

Miguel Perez

You’re 100% right. Ye is severely addicted to Sex/Porn. He’s also very addicted to alcohol and while he was going through his bipolar episodes. He got addicted to opioids. He’s trying to drown out the pain he feels for losing his mother. As much as he says his father and him are on good terms. I cant shake the feeling that his dad is really just there as a horrible replacement of his mother. I think you’re going to like Pablo. But I really hope you check out Watch the Throne. It has Murder to Excellence, Otis, No church in the wild, Fellas in Paris and much more.

Tyler Scott

The last few minutes of Runaway is my fav part and makes me tear up, him basically pouring out his soul but it's unintelligible to us bc he doesnt feel like anyone understands him

Anonymous

I like how on the song power the words 'so exciting' roll into 'suicide' not sure if intentional. I also like how your first introduction to the lyrically-dense rapper RZA is one so simple. I love MBDTF but tbh life of Pablo is my favourite. If going in order, Pablo would be next, but he did release a collab album with Jay-z between this and yeezus, though not really a kanye album i'd argue still a part of his discography (kanye and jay-z embracing being kings) perhaps you can fit it in the week before your monthly kanye album reaction 🙏 that would be dope

Anonymous

I know you probably get 100s of comments telling you to listen to things and whatnot, but something that I think is definitely worth listening to is the full version of the song/poem Kanye sampled in Who Will Survive In America: Comment #1 - Gil Scott-Heron. I think listening to the full version and what it actually means is really interesting and sheds some light on why Kanye may have used it.

Anonymous

First of all, before I comment, I'll admit to my bias. This is honestly top 3 albums of all time any genre for me and Kanye is a genius. I'll probably need to come back and comment again because I'm only at Gorgeous but come on man "does Kanye have a sense of humour?" haha you literally crack up laughing 2 bars later. How many times have you laughed at a Ye line through all your reactions?

Anonymous

One more thing, you're absolutely right about Kanye getting dog piled on when he was going through a lot in his life. Not only did he lose his mother and fiance, 808s was considered a flop. Everyone on TV was clowning him for it felt like months. Every single person on TV had to give him an insult. Even Obama called him a Jackass (abamanation of Obamas Nation.) I can't stress how much everyone openly laughed at him on the biggest shows on TV. So when he says F South Park and F SNL, he's not taking it as a joke and I get it... even though that South Park episode is GOAT'ed. Love you Bob, I think Lupe fiasco is gonna surprise you with how Lyrical rap can get. And don't forget to watch the runaway video its so beautiful!

Samu Tolvanen

Will you be doing Watch the Throne before The Life of Pablo? It's the Jay Z collab album Ye did. Would be awesome if you also found a time to react to the album Cruel Summer Kanye did with a bunch of artists. It came out before Yeezus and has the sound begin to lean in that direction a bit. There are zero reactions of that album on YouTube so far.

Lex

TLOP is my personal favorite but it’s definitely not for everyone.

Anonymous

I cried at like 3 different points in this Album. Maybe Bob can't relate because he's such a happy guy with a wife and kids! But I can really feel the pain of trying to achieve that on Kanye vocals. He's such a tortured soul. But it brings soo much divinity to this album. It feels like the truth is spilling out of his soul

Anonymous

Man I wish I could donate to Bob and make him watch stuff. Kanye interview on drink champs was hilarious

Brock Asher

Fun Fact: Genius named this the best album of the decade

Anonymous

Your reaction to the first part is almost the exact opposite of my first listen. I originally only liked the first 4 tracks and runaway, it took 3-4 listens for me to appreciate the last half of the album. Obv I now love almost every song, but it was funny to see your initial reaction

Anonymous

You look sick (in a good way) in that suit. Are you going to do Watch The Throne or go straight for The Life of Pablo?

Anonymous

On a side note, Justin Vernon, who is the singer/songwriter for Bon Iver who was on Lost in the World, Monster and Dark Fantasy on this album (and was also on I am a god, hold my liquor and I'm in it off Yeezus) has made great albums also. though not hip hop, more indie/alternative, his album 22, a million (a personal great of mine) definitely has Kanye's influence all over it. It might be interesting for you to hear what someone who is influenced by Kanye take it to another genre. I know you're a hip hop reaction channel and I love hip hop, but if you ever decide to do other album reactions once in a while it might be cool. I did notice turning the tables had a 22, a million album hung up back so I expect a reaction from them some time in the future.

Anonymous

I can’t unhear the kazoo..

Anonymous

Looking sharp Bob. I'm surprised you didn't like the first 3 tracks. Especially how you even mentioned that they set the tone for the subject matter. The mountain analogy was on point. And how Cudi's chorus on Gorgeous supports said analogy. Orrrr could this be a Taboo all ever again, where you didn't really like the first 2-3 songs but end up liking them later on after more listens? Maybe, we'll see. Great reaction video either way 👍🏾

Anonymous

There is no Kazoo! LOL

Anonymous

I see a lot when people want to praise an album, or a work of art, something along the lines of "no matter how many times you go into it, you'll always come out of it with something new." I've never really gotten that feeling with many albums, but I can for sure say that every time I revisit this album, I learn something new, or find a new interpretation of a song. As for Runaway - maybe I'm a little biased as it's literally my most listened to song of all time, I find that every time you listen to it, the outro gets a little shorter. And man, I love how every single time the chorus is repeated in Lost In the World, it gets more big and loud, and by the end it's an explosion of sound and feeling into your ears. Pablo is still my favorite tho LOL can't wait! Great reaction as always.

Anonymous

I know you liked the verse, but Alfo Media made a video making fun of Jay Z's verse on monster that you might find funny lol

Anonymous

Runaway was premiered at the 2010 VMAs as a live performance. I love this performance but you can't find it on youtube for some reason https://www.reddit.com/r/Kanye/comments/azf6q0/kanye_performing_runaway_at_the_2010_vma_awards/

Anonymous

Wanted to point out that on the last verse on Power, the last lyrics read "I got the power to make your life so exciting", but as "so exciting" is echoed it starts to sound like "suicide", right before it drops into the outro with "Now this will be a beautiful death" and "jumping out the window". There are a lot of little lyrical and auditory details on this album, some of which you pointed out that i didn't even consider before, even though this is probably one of my most played albums of all time. I'd say it's Kanye's most meticulous album by far.

Anonymous

“Wow this was a great Jay Z verse” You have no idea what’s about to come next Bob

Anonymous

Another note “I tried to tell you but all I could say… is sorry?” I think Kanye was at the point in the album where he couldn’t come to grips with his ego

Alex Cagle-Sanchez

I’m sure after a few more listens, the first 3 will grow on you.

Lil Mac

Great video! Like other comments are saying I really think you'll grow to love those first three tracks, especially Power, which is often revered as Kanye's best and most iconic track. It could again be a case of you expecting a certain sound and when it doesn't match it it disappoints you, but those first 3 tracks really are great. IMPORTANT NOTE: I think you should do Watch the Throne next, I know The Life of Pablo is technically Kanye's next solo album (after Yeezus of course) but Watch the Throne is a collaborative album with JAY-Z that released the year after this album, and if you plan on reacting to KIDS SEE GHOSTS which is ultimately a Kanye/Cudi collaborative album, it only makes sense to also listen to Watch the Throne (you could compromise by doing WTT and TLOP in the same month, but that's up to you)

Anonymous

Hey Bob, great reaction. Cannot lie I think pablo is far better but great album nonetheless. I can see it being a strange first listen as Pablo is quite discombobulating before you really familiarise yourself with it but I think you’ll love it.

Tommy Tran

Your connection to fame at the end was on point. I’m not sure if you’ve ever watched the Mallory Bros before but they did a perfect breakdown of the album and how it’s about Fame on their YouTube. It’s a To Pimp A Butterfly Vs Dark Twisted Fantasy video

Anonymous

definitely a very good album, especially production wise (also beautifully mastered, it just sounds great). But I never really loved it as much as the other kanye projects. Im exited for pablo though!!

Razer Droid

It is produced beautifully, but the mixing and mastering is very rough at times, and shows some really dated production aspects. The vocal distortion with bitcrushing is the worst offender in my opinion, makes the verses sound slapped on and annoying on the ears.

Anonymous

Great reaction Bob! I’ve seen a few others comment already, but I think you should listen to Watch The Throne (Kanye’s Collab album with Jay-Z) before continuing on to The Life Of Pablo. You mentioned Yeezus felt like an extension of this album, but personally I think Watch The Throne is a more fitting extension. I also think (if you have the time) before you make your additional thoughts video, you should watch the Runaway short film that was released with this album. I think it’ll give you a similar yet different view on the album and its message. Keep up the great work!

Anonymous

Kanye did Dark Fantasy, Watch the Throne, Cruel Summer, Good Fridays and Fashion in 12 months only. "no one man should have all that power"

Evie K

Another one I love is that, when you listen to "Hell of a Life," when Kanye sings the hook, he doesn't really pronounce the 'f' in 'life,' so that it sounds like "baby, we'll live a hell of a lie," hinting that his fantasy of finding love in that song is just that: a fantasy, a lie.

Mihai Alexandru Untu

Really love your outfit for this reaction sir. So classy. Much love and respect.

Anonymous

Some of my favorite details about the album The album starts with a story being narrated by Nicki and ends with clapping The line “so excited” on Power gets repeated to sound like “Suicide”. Ties with the outro after Runaway you are able to make certain words but not everything. You basically nailed the meaning. Kanye throughout Hell Of A Life always pronounces “life” as “lie”

Anonymous

There is a movie that goes with this album named Runaway. You can find it on Ye's Youtube channel. I would love to see a reaction of it.

Anonymous

TLOP soon please

Anonymous

I agree that the people making annotations sometimes speculate/often reach too much, but I think you dismiss them too fast. As an example the joke in Kanye's "So Appalled" verse you didn't get was perfectly explained in the annotation. Much love Bob, another great video.

Anonymous

You liked Raekwon's verse on Gorgeous. He's also a core Wu-Tang member like RZA.

Anonymous

I like when he said "Raekwon did a great job." I imagine Raekwon watching it, "Thanks Bob."

joe

I discovered you shortly after Turning the Tables. You both are the first and only subscriptions I ever made on Patreon.

joe

The giant looks in the mirror and sees nothing. But everyone else sees the giant. - Donda West I thought of this when you were talking about Power.

Anonymous

Hey Bob seeing as you already did Yeezus, which was next in Kanye's solo discography, you should probably his WATCH THE THRONE collab album that came out right after MBDTF.

Anonymous

Hey Bob, since you mentioned Kanye's sense of humor, you should check out this short bit he did about himself on SNL (from 2007): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFQ0MttoEc8

Anonymous

First of all Kanye is actually one of the funniest rappers. He has so many funny lines especially on college dropout This album uses a lot of metaphors. Here is a really good vid that breaks it down for runaway. https://streamable.com/pboyaz But this same thing continues on tracks like power and especially all of the lights. Kanye never slapped a girl or had a restraining order. It’s a metaphor for fucking his public image up. He talks about a girl replacing him with a new guy. Similar to how he saw the music industry replacing him with new artists Hell of a life is the most underrated song on the album. It’s really creative how he related the discrimination he receives as a black man to the discrimination a pornstar receives and Kanye imagines this similarity would make him and the pornstar a good match. BUT Kanye isn’t actually falling in love with a pornstar, he’s so desperate for affection that he’s watching porn and instead of just getting his nut, he’s fantasizing about falling in love with the pornstar. Think about the album name, my beautiful dark twisted FANTASY. It’s all a fantasy. Also, everytime he says hell of a life in that song, he doesn’t finish saying the f in life. He’s actually saying hell of a lie which alludes to my point that this situation is just a fantasy. The fantasy continues on blame game where, after the girl not picking up his call, he fantasies about her accidentally calling him back and hearing her over-the-top praising him. And this is why Kanye fans swear he’s a genius.. Also, you should watch the runaway short film before your additional thoughts video. And now that you’ve heard 2 excellent Pusha T verses (so appalled, runaway), you should listen to one of his albums. My favorite artists in order are Kanye, Kendrick, Pusha t, Jay z, nas, and j Cole. His best album is Daytona and Kanye produced every song on the album. On replace of Yeezus, you should also watch the greatest interview ever which occurred after yeezus dropped and the greatest tour ever, the yeezus tour https://youtu.be/DR_yTQ0SYVA https://youtu.be/ysdaXqBGHLY

Anonymous

Great write up Ryan. You added a lot of insightful info there. The Zane Lowe interview is a good idea. I plan on linking the Charlamagne interview after The Life of Pablo.

Anonymous

You should watch the short film he did for the for album called Runaway. It adds some additional context to his mindset at the time. I think some of the things you touched on are actually not far off when you dig into Runaway.

Anonymous

I loved ur explanation of runaway in the end, I would say this is Kanye best preformance but I appreciate yeezus and LR more for some reason but it not a huge gap. Runaway in my opinion is Kanye best song

bobthepoppop

Yeah, I've gotten a little cocky with annotations now that I feel more comfortable with the music. I need to get back to reading them before just tossing them out.

bobthepoppop

Great write up, Ryan. Thanks for that. I watched the breakdown of Runaway and it was so fun watching that guy get all excited while explaining it to his buddy :)

Anonymous

I don’t know if you’ve listened to it already but this leaked song called Mama’s boyfriend , his best unreleased song imo. It uses a Billy Joel sample and just sounds unlike anything else Kanye has ever put out tbh really cool. Great lyrics too https://youtu.be/w9zYH1ji5Bc
