Dropbox Test (Patreon)

Before posting, it looks like the Dropbox (free trial version, at least) will not play directly through Patreon? Meaning you direct to Dropbox? Meaning this won't work as well as seamlessly as Streamable?

If anyone is a Patron on Jon Dention, please share what his setup looks like as he told me he switched to DB after Vimeo tried to gouge him too.

Says "download app or continue to website" i could watch on my phone so no issue with that so far

Hmm... already not working for me. I can see a screen to click, but then clicking results in the image going away and then nothing happening.

Only thing is that you have to go to your web browser on mobile to watch wide screen but shouldn't be a problem on computers

Works on my phone when I click continue to site but not when I click the play button from the Patreon link. Also I noticed a little thing that might not really matter but something I use and maybe others have as well when watching. I’m on an iPhone 13 and when I try to do the Picture in Picture to have it open using another app it doesn’t work since I think it’s outside of Patreon. Vimeo would allow that which was cool. That’s really the only thing I noticed otherwise it would be the same viewing experience! Love the videos as well man!

Thank you, Liam. This is helpful. Dropbox, as far as I can tell, can be very useful for this, but I need to learn a few more tricks to make it work right. Streamable was very easy, but I have yet to get a reply from their sales department on what they plan to charge.

the dropbox audio is noticeably nicer than streamable. there’s a few more screens to tap thru for me but it’s not really a big deal (for me at least). i’m really here for the audio experience and dropbox wasn’t annoying to use

It didn't work for me on desktop or phone. I clicked the image and I got a white square where the video would play on patreon. A link appeared so I copy/pasted the link and it brought me to the thumbnail of the video. I'm on the Patreon website via desktop. Clicking on the play button turned the video box white and no video displayed. What did display was a link, when I copy and pasted this link in a new tab, it just displayed a .jpeg of the video. I watched both test videos, and I’m a Patron of Denton, so hopefully this helps along with everyone else’s feedback. For context, I use my iPhone (and occasionally iPad, mostly the same experience) when watching any of your content on YouTube or Patreon. The Streamable video opened on their website but within the browser built into the Patreon app, no need to open in a separate browser or app. DropBox looked like it tried to do the same but never loaded past a blank white page. It does the same when I try to open in the Safari browser, so I had to open it in the DropBox app, where it played just fine. I do have ad-blocking installed on my devices and on my network, occasionally that can cause issues with loading, but I don’t believe that’s the case here. That’s also the same experience I have with Denton’s content since DB is what he switched to. I posted this comment in an earlier post of yours, but in case you didn’t see it, my experience with his videos on DB is that I can stream them in the app but only for the first hour of the video, anything beyond that requires actually downloading the file, which in turn requires me to have enough free space in my DB account to do so. Since I only have a free account with 2GB of storage, I often don’t have enough space to download it. That’s the only real downside to that setup, I don’t mind the extra couple clicks. Seamless integration into Patreon is nice (ie Vimeo), but the huge price jump for you isn’t worth the slight convenience for me. Also, as Liam already commented in this post, picture-in-picture is handy for me since I always watch on my phone and often like to keep videos playing while doing something else at the same time.

You mentioned you’ve been in contact with TTT, have you checked what they’ve done with Vimeo? I assume they had to pay for the upgrade considering the size of their audience, but I don’t know. Maybe having the MP3 in addition to the video means listeners (as opposed to watchers) can download the much smaller file, but I can’t imagine that saves enough bandwidth to keep Vimeo appeased.

Same issue I'm having. What I've learned is that it's an embedding issues (as in Dropbox doesn't play videos in other websites), so that's why it doesn't work. What I don't understand is why some users are redirected to a link that works and others (like us) are not.
