It's more merciful than slow suffocation or having the throat ripped out. Plus the knife depicts the Golden Lioness, so the act is linked to that spirit.

This page is just so beautiful and spiritual. The battlehorn elk looked so terrified and yet Puka's prayer to the Golden Lioness seemed to reassure it, knowing that there was death coming but there was a paradise waiting for him on the other side of the knife. His spirit would be gone, but his body will be left behind to feed a hungry tribe.
