Content
Hiroko Utsumi is an anime director known to fans for her very specific brand of appeal through acclaimed works like Free! Iwatobi Swim Club, Free! Eternal Summer, Banana Fish and Sk8 The Infinity. When it was announced she would be working on her second Original Anime at Studio MAPPA titled Bucchigiri?!, fans were reasonably excited to see what she would bring to the table as someone who fans perceive to make anime with fujoshi, queer people and women in mind. However by the time that Bucchigiri ended, it became clear by general consensus that it is undoubtedly the most disappointing anime Utsumi has ever directed. In this video we'll take a look at Bucchigiri and critique several of its undesirable aspects, dive into the history of Hiroko Utsumi's other more notable works and highlight several other anime that aired in the same season which contained the kind of appeal Bucchigiri should have had, one in particular that makes the lost promise of Bucchigiri all the more disappointing.
