We're continuing our journey through Disney in the 1940s with a look at Bambi, the final feature film before the studio's lucrative (but messy)  "war propaganda" period. Though the story's same beats were copied by the much-more-successful The Lion King 50 years later, Bambi exists as a testament to just how much the talented artists at Disney were pushing the medium visually—even if it nearly made them broke. On this month's episode of What A Cartoon Movie, get ready to call your mom afterwards as we explore this brief-but-beautiful tribute to nature.

My obligatory Canadian correction: Sarah Polley is from Toronto, not Vancouver. You will get flayed alive for mixing up those cities here

Up front I would just like to say that one of my favourite part of these podcasts is when Bob goes in depth into what Disney kept and changed from the original source material since I've never gone back to check the original tales out. It's fascinating to know that even Bambi was saying a lot more than the movie does and skewed to a more mature audience. -- Much like Dumbo and Pinocchio, revisiting this as an adult leaves me kind of bored. It certainly LOOKS GREAT, but none of the three really have enough substance to keep me interested or feel like I want to go back to them again anytime soon, unlike most of the renaissance era movies or ones like A Goofy Movie and The Emperor's New Groove. Obviously these are hugely important to the medium of animation and the progress of animated film, but they don't hold up as well to me as some of my favourite live-action movies of the era, and I guess I have similar taste to kid me since I rewatched stuff like Aladdin or Lion King waaaaaaay more than the older Disney fare. I guess we'll see how something like Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella holds up when we inevitably get to them down the line on WAC.

After about 6, maybe 7, months of consistent listening, I've listened to every What A Cartoon Movie episode to date, including this one! To be more on topic though, I really need to revisit Bambi. I think I watched it once as a kid and I was just bored by it back then. 🤣
