With Dreamworks as new competition and the pressure of a big budget on top of them, Disney was in a weird place as they began to work on the film that eventually became 2000's The Emperor's New Groove. Learn about the very complicated process that started as a Sting musical called "Kingdom of the Sun," eventually turning into a modern buddy picture animated like a Chuck Jones short. It's a wild history and a funny movie we're discussing this month in our final extra-long podcast of 2023, so grab your llama and your shoulder angel for our podcast on The Emperor's New Groove!

Decided to give Kronk’s New Groove a watch. Unfortunately, it fails to capture any of the magic of the original and is deeply unfunny. There’s a dinner scene that similar to the first’s that’s good and Tipo getting his own shoulder angels is funny, but the rest just falls flat.

This movie SHOULDN'T work, but it's just so goddamn enjoyable and funny too. It's kind of just a series of shitposts (I mean that as a compliment) with a loose plot connecting them, but it's just so well acted and animated that you can't really be mad about the plotholes or inconsistencies. It's a perfect example of why something that may sound bad on paper can be great purely on the basis of its execution. This movie came out when I was super young and I've always been a fan of it, and I was super pleased it held up when I revisited it for the fist time in ages back in 2019. With this rewatch (and the podcast's deep dive into it), I think I love it more than ever
