As for Vanessa, I think the committee apologized and gave her crown back years ago 👑

Henry!!! I had a “lip licking” compulsion/habit when I was kid too! Until this episode, I’ve never heard anyone else say the same. My mom also put vaseline on my lips every morning and night but I’m pretty sure it was to keep them from getting chapped (the taste didn’t bother me at least) along with the chapsticks she’d send me to preschool with. I do remember to help me stop she bought me “The Bernstein Bears and the Bad Habit,” in which Sister Bear’s habit was biting her nails, but it backfired because as soon as she read it to me I tried biting my nails (did not enjoy and never did it again) and she was like “What have I done?! No more bears for you.”

I like to think that, somewhere, there's a recording of Dan singing that whole damn title.

Harry's cigarette spokesperson reminded me of anti-smoking ad Crocodile Tears, featuring a Harry Shearer voiced croc representing big tobacco and hitting similar talking points.

To rebuff on the lack of smoking in cinema, I think this comes twofold. First off, cigarette smoking is very rare for anyone over 35 as it's been replaced by vaping (which you can do indoors) or any other heavier or OTC drug. I think the ubiquity of smoking weed through joints or bongs has completely overtaken cigarette smoking in pop culture since the 2000s as recreational marijuana was becoming more and more common place (even in places where it was illegal). Marijuana has it's own connotations, perhaps more negative due to it's history of association with criminals/stoners. If you want to destress in 2023, smoking cigarettes seems like the worst option since you can take marijuana in so many forms instead or do something more social/recreational. The only people who seem to enjoy the taste of tobacco are cigar smokers (which is more of a specialized market) and very rare hipsters who like loose tobacco and pipes.

$250 for an entry fee in the 1990's was like $2500 in the nowies. This is a great episode, I always crack up when Homer screams OW MY GHAD! at the revelation he's the prize winner, its the reaction any one of us would have, in this world where noone ever wins anything. And Krusty, so on point in this one, prob my fave character in the Simps-O-Verse.

The Donna Summer version of MacArthur Park was the only one I was familiar with, so when I heard the original it was very jarring. Then finding out that Dumbledore was singing it… strange!

I think the lasting impact of MacArthur Park was knowing that it was Richard Harris, the initial Dumbledore and Marcus Aurelius himself. I recall my mom telling me it was him hearing it on a soft classic rock station.

We have a Miju in Portland, and it's actually kind of expensive, but the quality is higher.

Great discussion, guys. You got me thinking of of what this episode could have been like as a two-parter. There's so much they could've mined from Lisa's position of power, Amber plotting to get her crown back and fleshed out stories for the other characters. 🙂

My goodness, y'all are treading dangerous ground repeating his name sevetal times.

Uh ACTUALLY guys it was a Konami Justifier NOT a Sega Menacer the congressman held up in Congress. I hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

Props to Merritt K for finishing the "sex cauldron" joke. Quality guest. 🍺

With regards to smoking in TV/movies, Netflix is absolutely ridiculous about this. I was watching an episode of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and suddenly there was a big black splotch on the screen near Jojo's face. It took me a few seconds until I realized Jojo was smoking and that was Netflix's clunky way of censoring it. Meanwhile that same episode a girl, who appeared to be 14 at the oldest, was running around in nothing but a towel.

I went to a concert and they kept hyping this special guest at the end. I was really hoping it was going to be Santa, but then it just wound up being Matt Mays.

Great episode and it was nice to see Merritt back on the podcast! -- The news bit of "A new fad that's sweeping the nation: wasting food" is just 50% of TikTok trends, like the old "licking ice cream and then putting it back in the freezer" or the recent Grimace Shake phenomenon (though that one is much less skeezy)

About ingesting Vaseline... I think it's seen as something that greases up your guts cuz it's often suggested as a way to cure your cat of hairballs (just a dollop of it on their fur for them to lick off). Maybe this was an old remedy for people too...? But I also shared Henry's lip-licking affliction, though I was forced to apply Desitin to the area. It only helped the affected area a bit, but moreso it got my bullies to attack me more for "wearing white lipstick". Maybe petroleum jelly would have been better...

I'm too scared to check but I wonder if Joe Camel has been reclaimed by the furry community
