This week we join the family on their controversial trip to Brazil, and our buddies Toby Jones (Regular Show, OK K.O.) and Maddie Queripel (Regular Show, Infinity Train) are along for the ride! After a bunch of jokes about early '00s phone companies, the Simpsons head to Rio, and we take time to go into all the moments that caused controversy with representatives of Brazil's government back in 2002. So grab a speedo and let's get in the culturally inaccurate conga line for this week's podcast!

So the bit about the phone company names reminds me when I used to work at a call centre for a cellular company which may or may not still exist? While I worked there Cingular got bought by AT&T and rebranded then unbranded back to Cingular. And let me tell you, the people who phoned us to make sure they were getting their 10% company discount were not very understanding when we had to port them back and forth between the different customer service portals.

Regarding custom t-shirts in the early 2000s, there was actually a sort of precursor website to redbubble called Cafe press.com. I know this cause I used it myself to make a few custom T-shirts. Most of which were Simpsons or Futurama related. I mainly just made them for myself as one offs, But I did have a couple of them that sold a few shirts every year (the most popular of which was simply a ' I hate bottles ' t-shirt from 30% iron chef ... Just the words. I hate bottles in large point comic sans on a plain white tee ) and so in about five or six years I finally reached the minimum cash out amount of I think $50 and could finally close my account.

Wait... That nun in Brother From the Same Planet says "This isn't funny"...?! I've always heard it as "This is it for me!" Aw, no, I've been makin' an idiot outta myself!

The most insane conga line I've ever seen was at an anime con here in Portland while I was deejaying. Those weebs came to party.

Now that’s what I call a moon shot.

Not even closely related to the episode, but, I came across the absolute best restaurant in Seattle completely by accident. It's a high-end Korean food place called Paju, on the opposite corner to another favorite, Toulouse Petite. Seattle food puts the Bay Area to shame, imo

We live on the Eastside, but we’re right by 520 so we go to Seattle as much as anywhere else. Much broader dining options! We’ll have to check it out.

I don’t know about other PB brands, but I’m an Adams girl and it says on the jar to refrigerate after opening. I admit, stirring Adams beforehand is a pain, but it’s worth it. I wonder if brands like Skippy or Jif (Jiff?) don’t have that issue b/c they don’t need stirring? 🤷‍♀️ I can’t get past the fact that the banana peels turn black - but I’m with Bob, I think I’d prefer a chilled banana. Short of our mandarin oranges, we keep fruit in the fridge. One other banana note: I recently read that if you cover the top of the banana bunch with tape, they will ripen slower. Something about that being where the gases release? The produce guy looked skeptical when I asked him, and said it’s mainly about the temperature. The ripen faster in hotter environments. Maybe I need to store them in our pantry. That’s what I do with our bread so it doesn’t get moldy as fast!

One surprise appearance of Aquarela do Brasil: It's referenced in the John Williams score for the Star Wars film The Last Jedi, during the Canto Bight scene. Ironically it's for a location based more on coastal European cities like Monaco, but it still fits the overall atmosphere. (There's even a reference to Terry Gilliam's Brazil in the dialogue during that same scene)

I believe Julio says “make sex look like eh-church” rather than “a church”. Hank may have been going with a pseudo-Spanish accent where words like “school” or “Spain” (“escuela” / “España”) are sometimes mispronounced by Spanish speakers in English as “eh-school” or “eh-Spain” with an “eh” sound in front. Or he could be saying “look like-a church” similar to Mario’s “it’s-a me” or “let’s-a go!” Either way, it’s a funny line that still sticks with me today.

All problematic aspects of this one aside, “Everything here is something!” One of my all timer Marge quotes

Double comment! Frankie Muniz actually does remember making Malcolm in the Middle. While he has had like 9 concussions and severe migraines which no doubt contributed, he also says some of that lack of specific memory comes from him filming a ton of that show and it all blurs. He talks more about it on a podcast he was on with Steve-O and how the “Frankie Muniz can’t remember Malcolm” is kind of an invention from his season on Dancing With the Stars: https://youtu.be/j38OAU-FANE
