For the first Talking Futurama of 2023, we're celebrating Valentine's Day a whole month early with a look at robot love gone awry! When the Planet Express ship gets a new, sexy AI that sounds a lot like Sigourney Weaver, Bender becomes smitten with this new crew mate... then returns to his Benderly ways. What follows is a 2001: A Space Odyssey parody that's mostly a takedown of those nasty heart candies technology hasn't improved upon in over 1000 years. So listen in to hear valuable relationship advice and tapir facts!

was probably one of many who watched this as a youth way before 2001 had entered my cultural peripheral vision. I remember seeing it for the first time with some friends and when Dave is working on shutting down Hal by pulling all those tabs out I went "Hey! I won a free ticket to six flags!" to looks of bafflement.

On related Six Flags news, they are in some difficulties, doing really really poorly recently for a bunch of reasons (new president, admission price increases, poor upkeep of current parks, etc.)

Pavement is indie rock! Never did like the term "alternative" as it usually seemed to refer to major labels bands with platinum albums. I have no issue with either of those things but it's hardly alternative.

So... I was going to write in about the Amy's indifference to bear slaughter being a joke about food production and how horrible it is but hard to really process. BUUUUTTT then Bob said that no one watched "Heartbreakers". I am the one! I was a teen and had a mega crush on Jennifer Love Hewitt and I was there DAY 1! I must have watched this movie several hundred times and it was my introduction to Sigourney Weaver, sadly. There are some dated problems with the movie, but there's a lot to like in it. Jason Lee is very charming, Sigourney and JLH are just stunning, but the best part of that movie is Ray Liota. He is HAMMING IT UP and I think he knows exactly what movie he is in. I had no idea until Bob said it that David Mirkin directed that movie. Okay I think I've talked enough about Heartbreakers, I'll go back to being ashamed of it.

I have to disagree with Spin Doctors being "college rock." The Spin Doctors were actually part of the late 80s-early 90s jam band scene that followed in the wake of Grateful Dead and Phish. In fact, it was the success of their debut album going 5x platinum that led to other 90s jam band getting success like Widespread Panic, Hootie & the Blowfish, Blues Traveler, Rusted Root, Dave Matthews Band, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, ect. Plus, I don't think seen any music publication in the past 20 years use the term "college rock" since the term "indie rock" has fully supplanted it. But if you do wanna know more about the Spin Doctors, Todd in the Shadows has a Trainwreckords on their failed follow-up which answers the question of why don't you know a third Spin Doctors song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7waAs6fO20k

The bit pointing out that the Planet Express actually displays a radical gender fluidity made me chuckle quite a bit. I hadn't thought about that when I was watching the episode

Okay okay hear me out: Piss Christ is, as you say, very edgelord and there is an argument to be made that it was designed specifically to stir shit up, but if you just look at the photo, without any context… it’s beautiful. It’s an image of a crucifix in this beautiful golden color, and I think there is also an argument to be made that it is about natural beauty and God being in everything, even something you might think is profane. In other words, conservatives are more interesting in complaining than they are seeing the God they claim to care about.

This is not an A tier episode of Futurama, but it does have some A tier writing. That whole bit between Lrrr and the Planet Express crew about the heart candy is one of the show's best moments. I have quoted that damn "chalky and unpleasant" line possibly more than any other from this show. And as someone who grew up in New England in close proximity to the company, I had to endure a lot of boomers growing up trying to convince me that Necco made good candy. Necco does not and has never made good candy. It's all terrible. The only thing I hated more than Necco in my Halloween candy was Good & Plenty, a candy with a very misleading name.

As well the copious 2001 references, I'm pretty sure the ending is a parody of the needless-but-not-terrible sequel 2010 from 1984. Here it is for comparison (spoilers for a sci-fi sequel from the 80s that no one saw): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38EDhpxzn2g&t=1m30s

My wife loves those disgusting candy hearts, so I guess someone does.

When I was the editor of the student newspaper at my university, I included Lrrr's line about “wuv” in the masthead of the Valentine's Day issue. After submitting it to the printer, they e-mailed me back to say how much they enjoyed the reference. For that experience alone, I will always like this episode. Also, there are tapirs in the opening sequence of 2001, so maybe all the tapir talk in this episode is yet another stealth reference to that movie.

i went to an all-jewish high school where acknowledging even the most americanized “christian” holidays like valentine’s day (and halloween) was frowned upon by the more joyless members of the staff. turns out there’s an obscure jewish equivalent holiday, tu b’av, which happens in late summer and is more of a sadie hawkins deal. great episode, the concept of wuv continues to confuse and infuriate me.

I seen heart candy sayings from friends with quotes from the show this weekend
