Thanks to the generosity of premium patron Devin, this week we're taking a look at the first animated adaptation of Kentaro Miura's acclaimed dark fantasy manga, Berserk! Despite its slightly silly name, Berserk weaves a grim tale of destiny, betrayal, and revenge, and made its bleak, violent medieval backdrop a smash-hit with audiences nearly a decade before A Game of Thrones. On this episode, join us as we discuss the history of this Japanese comic series that spanned more than 30 years, its creator and his untimely death, and the 1997 anime series that attempted to rein in this astoundingly crafted story on a modest budget.

Thanks for doing this episode. I'd heard of Berserk before, but didn't know much about it. I listened to this episode on Monday, and I'm half way through the manga now on Saturday. It's been a great read so far.

So happy to see Berserk on here. The original series might not look as pretty as the movie trilogy, but I think it has better character development. I can't handle watching the English dub though. Whenever I hear Gaston (Goku's voice actor) it just breaks my brain. When's the Blabbin' About Berserk series coming? Blabbin' Behelits? You'll think up a good name I'm sure, just make it happen! I need all the Berserk I can get with Miura's passing!

Goddamn you Crunchyroll…I accidentally watched the first two episodes of the 2016 series. I was wondering why an anime from 97 had so much cgi.

A little late to the conversation but I was recently made aware of the 14th Century German soldier-turned-mercenary Götz von Berlichingen, who was known for being incredibly tough and, probably most relevant to Berserk, had an iron prosthetic hand. Götz, Guts. Probably a coincidence...
