It's the end of the month once again, which means it's time for another community podcast! This time around, we roll into the holiday season and discuss that new Disney+ short, the show's Fargo-inspired two-parter, Smithers' boyfriend, debunked 9/11 theories, the oral history of The Simpsons: Road Rage, and more. Plus, we go over our revised 2022 schedule and briefly review Netflix's Cowboy Bebop! And, as always, we respond to your questions and comments from our most recent round of episodes. So slather yourself in anti-bully salad dressing and get ready to listen to another great podcast!

Oof. The single WAC per month hurts, but your reasoning does make sense. Your health does take priority over content. I don’t blame you for wanting to take your time with the show. I do hope that this at least brings more variety to the miniseries topics. I’ve been enjoying Blabbin About Batman a whole lot because it’s a break from the typical adult cartoon sitcom subject matter. I’ll be very interested to see what the next mini series polls look like with KOTH and Futurama off of it. I’ll be tuning in regardless! Your shows have gotten me through so much of my final year of college, so I’m always appreciative of the hard work you guys put in.

The resurrection of the baked goods loving cats is topical for me this week. My wife bought one of those six packs of muffins over the weekend (chocolate chip, I think) and just left them on the counter forgetting that our cats have, on occasion, shown an interest. I woke up twice this week to see a tell-tale sign of where cat had licked the top of it and I threw them out. They know they're not allowed on the counter so this only happens when everyone is asleep. Growing up, I always had a cat and I don't recall her ever caring about baked goods. I also steer clear of baked pastries as breakfast items so having to throw some muffins away didn't really bother me.

Curious if you had ever considered breaking the main feed apart into separate podcast feeds for each show to make finding episodes easier as well as decluttering the downloads for those who only listen to some of the shows? For example Talking Simpsons is one feed and What A Cartoon is a separate feed, etc?

Unfortunately Patreon only gives us one RSS feed. (It's the same with all creators.)

American media isn't fixated on Chinese censorship because it "wants to be racist against the Chinese government". Instead it is because this distracts from the fact that American media is responsible for similar (though more organic and typically but not always market driven) reactionary censorship, most often deployed against any discussion of actually progressive policy.

B. Traven

Sure, and some American media certainly has an incentive to play up nationalist rhetoric. However, the primary motive is the profit motive, and focusing on the problems of our enemies is much better for profit than whatever personal racist tendencies a producer at CNN or Fox News. There is some merit to race reductionism but ultimately there is a *ton* of academic work about why our media corps cover our "enemies" the way they do and it does not boil down to a simple racist impulse.

8 bit Christmas isn't bad. It's a Christmas story for the 80s...but that home alone sequel is abysmal.

I've always said this but I feel like the Burn Notice creative team would make great live action Cowboy Bebop scripts.

I also found Hank Azaria's Chief Wiggum really off in the Simpflix episode. Maybe because he was doing a scene where Wiggum cried but he didn't sound like the Wiggum I'm used to at all. Having finished Guardians of the Galaxy, I can see it's a fun ride and a steal at $30. Looks great on the PS5 too.

In regards to phantom Closed Captions, the only one I can remember was from the original broadcast of "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad Marge" (I think - could be mixing it up with some other Season 11-12 ep). There was a scene with a character either being placed in or escaping from a mental hospital and the captions showed lyrics to the classic Napoleon XIV novelty song "They're Coming to Take Me Away," while a completely different song played on the soundtrack. I'm assuming this was the result of some music rights issue popping up at the last minute.

I wanted to add my voice to the chorus of support for What A Cartoon. It was TS, of course, that brought me on board but the addition of WAC really cemented by enjoyment of the expertise you both provide making me a Patreon supporter. And while I was/am an anime fan going back to the early days of Gigantor & Speed Racer, if it wasn't for WAC I never would've known about Future Boy Conan or Inuyashiki. I picked those up as well as Gundam, Lupin the III, & other DVDs/BluRays because of the podcast. I do understand the practicalities that went into the schedule decisions. That said, WAC is now my favorite segment of the TS Universe & one day I hope to fund a Gigantor/Tetsujin 28 episode! :)

Just want to give some perspective from Hong Kong, since you guys admitted you weren't following that closely. The main reason this censorship was such a huge issue is because it never would have happened 2 or even 1 year ago. Only now, with China breaking their promise to not interfere with HK law until starting in 2047, do we have them censoring things like 6/4. Just this week, they tore down two permanent public displays that portrayed that date. They also canceled the yearly vigil that had been going on regularly for decades, this time under the guise of covid regulations, but also in 2019 before covid, with all organizers and anyone else related to it being arrested. So this isn't typical "Disney bowing to CCP pressure to censor their material in China" it is all new for Hong Kong. Also BTW I agree that the typical American politicians who latched onto this are the gross weirdos we don't want to have anything to do with, but all the laws being passed in relation to Hong Kong are bipartisan. Thought that was worth mentioning as well. Thanks!
