Happy new year! As we podcasters wrap up our holiday break, we're taking a week off from Simpsons to give you listeners a special treat: Four HOURS of Shrek chat! In case you didn't know, each month we do a premium podcast, What A Cartoon Movie, for our $10 Patreon subscribers, and now we're giving everyone a taste of the massive animation podcast fun we have each month. And of all the movies we covered last year, Shrek best of all covers the same early 2001 feelings that we're experiencing when discussing season 12. So enjoy our in-depth history and dissection of this ogre-rated film, and be sure to subscribe if you want to hear more!

I still wish Chris Farley's dialogue as Shrek would have been recorded before he died. It seemed like his line readings provide more emotional depth to that character in the one clip I heard.

Actually, nearly all of it was fully recorded before his death. The recordings exist, they’ve just been buried in the Dreamworks vault aside from that one clip

The first time this episode aired, my husband and I watched Shrek for the first time in 20 years in anticipation, and we paired the viewing with "Shamrock Shreks" (it was last March): A Mcdonald's Shamrock Shake with absinthe, because both are green like Shrek. It was a blast, if anyone wants a fun date night idea, but the downside is, probably thanks to all that absinthe we both walked away thinking Shrek was an absolute masterpiece, so it might not be worth it in the end.

I’ve always thought the Farley version wouldn’t have been as successful because he isn’t character-y as a voice actor, but I think you’re right. After hearing that clip, Farley’s Shrek sounds kind of cute and lovable, and the arch of wanting to be a knight gives him some guidance that isn’t “Well, Shrek is there and then some stuff happens.”
