Thanks to the generous patronage of James Eldred, we're taking a look at the cartoon that defined stop-motion animation on TV: Gumby! Art Clokey's animated chunk of clay delighted Baby Boomers during the earliest decades of TV, and returned in the late '80s to entertain their children before completely dropping off the face of the earth. This week, listen in as we explore the truly interesting life of Gumby's creator, and dig into one of his earliest, trippiest shorts. Why should you care? He's Gumby, dammit!

Im so glad to hear you guys talk about Gumby! I’m surprised you didn’t talk more about the crazy bearded main voice actor for Gumby. Dallas McKennon was known for being in a bunch of Disney cartoons as well as the theme parks. Specifically you can hear him in the line for big thunder mountain. He also originated the high pitched Hyena laugh heard in lady and the tramp, which has been reused in several cartoons movies and games... it was even used as the laugh for Ripper Roo in Crash Bandicoot. He had a crazy life story and you can watch crazy interviews with him on YouTube

I would have brought him up but I don't think he voices Gumby in this short (it sounds like a random kid or possibly a Clokey kid). There's lots of good stuff about him in the doc, though. - Bob

Ya'll didn't mention his mom lived in Visalia. It really was a blessing to get sent away from that shit hole.
