We return to the ever-growing DC Animated Universe with a request from Royce, one of our top Patreon subscribers! Yes, more powerful than a locomotive, it's Superman: The Animated Series! We talk about the Kryptonian's origins, how the show spun out of Batman, and how it paved the way for many DC toons to follow. Then we break down the season 2 episode Heavy Metal, which introduced the hero Steel to Metropolis, so up, up and away, mild-mannered listener!!

Hey guys-- I wanted to confirm that the Bruce Timm post you found was almost definitely the real deal. I'm assuming the post was from Toon Zone? Timm used to post there during the Justice League days. He would come into the the new episode thread and give his insights and actually interact with the community as b.t. It felt incredibly special to be a sixteen year old animation nerd on a pretty close knit community and having one of your heroes, Timm, come in and discuss. I think it was for a time, the only place where that cancelled Batman Beyond sequel had been discussed. The main way I know it was probably him is kind of roundabout! There was someone else on the Justice League production team who posted anonymously, but would provide really clear hints for future episodes that always came to fruition. So, if b.t. was an imposter, I feel like the other dude would have called him out on it.

This cartoon is so damn good and all of that behind the scenes stuff that's unconfirmed (planned as a tie-in to Superman Lives and forced to push Steel before WB abandoned giving that movie a chance in hell) would make a lot of sense. I'm glad that Timm & co. decided to take a stab at Superman after doing Batman, rather than just jumping right into more of the Caped Crusader, but it sucks that these days Superman is always second fiddle to Batman and doesn't really get his day in the sun anymore. At least we have Supergirl and Superman on TV - and I personally love that universe overall, even if the shows have had their low points (like anything, really). -- Livewire is fucking awesome and one of my favourite DC rogues, so I'll be forever thankful to this show for creating her. The Batgirl/Supergirl team up in the BTAS revival where they fight Livewire, Harley, and Ivy is a lot of fun and I was glad to see the Supergirl show bring Livewire into the fold during the first three seasons. I never realized Mercy was a creation for the show too - to me it always just made sense that Lex would have her around.
