It's time for the David Mirkin Era to begin on Talking Simpsons officially, and we're kicking it off with comedian/writer Mike Lawrence! After Mike shares fun stories of working with Simpsons legend Greg Daniels, we discuss the show's deepest tribute to Citizen Kane. In this absolute classic, Burns searches for Bobo, The Ramones sing "Happy Birthday," Homer eats a lot of cheese, and too many other beloved moments to name in one description. Plus, Mike gives us insights in Homer's debut as a roast comedian and much more in this deep dive. So look out Smithers, and listen to this podcast!

The mystery shot of Lisa you’re looking for is from season 2’s “Brush with Greatness”, where the original line is, “Forgive us Dad, but it takes time to properly sugarcoat a response.” Hopefully history proves me right

Roger Ebert also recorded a commentary for Casablanca. Watched it on YouTube recently. It has a well assembled sideshow of stills in place of the complete film which wouldn't be allowable. Very enjoyable!

Ian Stratton

Also Ozu's Floating Weeds and the Ebert penned Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

Absolutely legendary episode! I also watched Citizen Kane for the first time, right around the airing of this episode. According to google it goes for two hours, but it felt like four. I was so bored I literally had trouble keeping my eyes open, I didn't dare complain or doze though, I was watching it with one of my biggest film snob mates ever (who is now a feature film director) and it was being screened to me because I 'simply had to see it'. I have not watched it a second time in the thirty years since😴

It's insane to me that anyone would A) not like this episode and B) apologize for this episode. Sandy Grushow, if you're reading this, apologize for your apology. Rosebud is phenomenal.

Unquestionably a Top 5 episode of all time. It has given us so much. Not a week goes by that I don't think to myself, "Yes, we'll send the eye." Interestingly, I committed most of this one to memory based on the syndicated version, so one joke was fucked up for me for the longest time. After Homer says, "Moldy? Old? I'm gonna get something to eat!" and runs off, the syndicated version cuts right to the sequence with the football and the aquarium, so it looks like Homer runs off to get something to eat upstairs. I was like, "Um, I guess he has an upstairs snack stash or something? Sounds risky." But the actual version has the robot bear bit in the middle, so there's a time jump when you're back on Homer upstairs. My dumb ass walked around bothered by that for so long. ALSO, I thought Grandpa was saying, "So, how's my U?" for the LONGEST TIME until I realized he's saying, "So, how's by you?" I thought he was fishing for a compliment about his U-turning abilities or some shit. Like he did a U-turn right through their wall. Smh. Anyway, maybe even a Top 3 episode. EVERY time I buy a bag of ice from the grocery store I say, "Ooooooooooh, a head bag!"

Great episode, Mike was a tremendous guest. As much as I enjoy having funny people with no particular insight as guests, sometimes it's fun to have an expert on who remembers every specific joke and can real-time fact check the hosts.

Jonathon

Absolutely love this episode. The line "I'd just like to say this gig sucks!" will live in my head forever. It's such a hilarious delivery and it's something I wish I could say at work every day.

As a confessed Toy Boy I much enjoyed the diversion on action figures between Mike and Henry. I even have that silly Tatsu figure Mike mentioned. And I am very much the same way as far as my collecting goes today: I want to buy toys that are better than they were when I was a kid. I want 100% source material accuracy with a bunch of stuff and all of the articulation they can jam into a six inch piece of plastic without making it look ugly. I just need a bigger house so I can keep buying more of these things.

The Real Ghostbusters episode "Ghostbuster of the Year" spoiled me on Citizen Kane with a ghost that could only say "Rosebud" and just wanted his old sled back.

It's really hard to not agree with anyone calling this Best Episode Ever. I also think Mirkin is the best show-runner, but for a reason you didn't touch upon: he just did not give a shit about anything but making a funny show, which might be how those seasons also happened to be the most visually impressive... lots of room for artistic license.

Nell Scovell wrote about her brief friendship with Ann Coulter (back in 2001 before 9/11) and says that Ann Coulter doesn't understand that just insulting someone isn't funny. Hearing Mike say that Ann thought their jokes were too mean is confusing. But, as Nell concludes, maybe she just doesn't have a sense of humor. https://www.thedailybeast.com/ann-coulter-believes-shes-funny-actually-its-no-laughing-matter/

After a recent rewatch of "the classic seasons" I ended up with the opinion that seasons 3-4 were excellent, 5-6 were "just" great, and 7-8 were excellent again. Not sure I can articulate specifically why at the moment, but it was just my general vague feeling while watching the show. I do think that to some degree at least, something is lost when Homer's idiot dial is turned from "incredibly stupid" to "impossibly stupid." At any rate this is a solid episode, though it mainly just makes me want to watch Citizen Kane again lol.

Earlier this year I watched my blu-ray of Casablanca, and then immediately watched it again, but with the Ebert commentary. A lot of fun little insights on the film. IIRC he ended the commentary by saying he felt Citizen Kane was the best film of all time, but Casablanca was his favorite film of all time.

Oh gawd, Henry, I also tried the Kuro American cheese Pikmin sushi. I wasn’t the one who pulled it off the conveyor but said I’d eat it. It tasted like regret and nausea

If the JFK deleted scene had stayed in we all would have been sharing "Noisy crows!" memes after Trumps assassination attempts.

I think the movies a victim of it's own reputation as "The Greatest Film of All Time". I'll admit I didn't quite get the fuss when I first watched it but Roger Eberts commentary track explaining all the visual effects trickery gave me an appreciation of the craft. And you're right, there's nothing worse than being made to watch a movie by someone who watches you watch the movie.

With all the work that’s been put into identifying these clips, the possibility of Disney doing a proper restoration seems more plausible

Oh wow, this aired on my birthday! I'll always remember this bittersweet one because on the one hand, my folks let me ditch school that day and dropped me and my best friend off at Universal Studios in Hollywood. It was an autumn Tuesday so we had no lines for any attraction. On the other hand, while we were on the team tour, the guide announced that Vincent Price had just died. Was kind of a buzz kill for us.
