When the family-unfriendly Tim Burton horror/comedy Beetlejuice ended up being a big hit with kids, Warner Bros. made the strange decision to shove their undead deviant into the ever-changing landscape of children's programming. The result? A 94-episode animated series that depicts Lydia and Beetlejuice as best (platonic) buds whose adventures bring them to the depths of the Neitherworld and back. So does the pun-based, gross-out humor hold up 30 years later? And are beetles still a delicious treat? Listen in and find out!

Beetlejuice is part of the metv toons channel line up it's back on over the air tv

Frank Grimes

Always thought the fox run of Beetlejuice was cause abc ended, ala the critic. Had no idea it was running concurrently.

Frank Grimes

And if you have Amazon prime, it's part of their live tv line up on cartoon rewind

Alex Irish

Regrettably but all the same, it is NOT on Tubi currently, and my area doesn’t have METV Toons so I’d have to pay two bucks to rent the episode

Regarding the lack of Beetlejuice animated series branded toys, Kenner actually released a Play-Doh set. I have some fond memories of both this series and the Play-Doh set that I haven't thought of in decades. Also, apparently there were a couple Colorforms sets (remember Colorforms!?). Still, it's odd that they didn't release any series-based action figures or play sets.

Bob's schoolyard play method of "get a friend and pretend to be a movie" hits close to home. All of my first-grade recesses were spent playing The Phantom Menace and recreating it scene by scene. At one point, a kid we were unfamiliar with wanted in and we rather cruelly told him he could be the person watching the movie.

Somehow you guys brought this immediately back to baking! So Beetlejuice's semi-sweet pun would refer to something like chocolate chips or your average mass market dark chocolate bar (Hershey's Special Dark). These typically contain 45-55% cacao, the compound that gives chocolate most of its unique flavor. Baker's chocolate is actually a brand, but what I'm guessing Bob was referring to was their bittersweet chocolate, which is popular in baked goods. That's much darker at typically 65-80% cacao. You can also get more boutique brand dark chocolate bars in this range, but towards the lower end. As for Nelvana, they did great work here, but Rock & Rule would be hard to recommend. The music is fantastic, as is the animation, but it's only slightly better than Fire and Ice in the world of Heavy Metal inspired films. Tho some very talented ppl worked on it, the vibe of R&R is what if HM, but as done by theater kids.

If you want a figure just for display and nostalgia there was a Beetlejuice, with Ginger, released by bst axn a few years ago. It’s not the best action figure or anything, but it’s cheap and looks decent on the shelf.

Oh yeah, that's what I meant—not the brand name, but the more bitter chocolate used in baking. (Which tasted like dirt as a kid, but I love it now.)

A little tangent on the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes show. I watched it pretty regularly when it was airing, and one time my dad let me know that it's based on a really poorly made movie. So I was in on the joke when, in one episode, the characters in the cartoon are being tortured by being forced to watch footage from one of the two movies.

Henry must have been the last person to stream BeetleJuice on Tubi cause it is GONE lol had to buy the episode on YouTube Worth the 1.99$ though to hear you guys talk about it!

My main memory of this show is, similar to Bob, playing "Beetlejuice" but with my sister as opposed to a friend (my best friend at the time was a girl, but I don't remember any Beetlejuice talk with her). She would often go to my mom and tell her she wanted her hair like Lydia's which just meant she wanted that top ponytail thing instead of a more conventional ponytail. I'm pretty sure the "Lydia" terminology for her hair stuck around in our house long after we ceased to watch the show. This show is one of the few from the era with that kind of episode count to not have a toyline. It's really surprising that Kenner, who was the one making toys based on the film, didn't immediately just launch into a cartoon line as well assuming they had the rights to the entirety of the IP for toys. It's certainly a toyetic show. Coincidentally, this year NECA released a Beetlejuice themed action figure in its Ben Cooper Kids line. It's a toyline of 5" or so figures that are supposed to resemble kids in classic Ben Cooper costumes (plastic mask, smock, think Milhouse and his Radioactive Man costume) and I was really surprised to see that the Beetlejuice one was based on the cartoon and not the movie. The kid has a mask and a Halloween pail that resembles a skull design from the show and the smock has a bunch of pictures of Beetlejuice from the show printed on it. Having never seen a toy for this show that wasn't from a fast food restaurant, I had to buy it and add it to my Halloween display.

I still wouldn't recommend eating a Baker's bar straight. They aren't processed the same way as candy bars and aren't going to have that velvety texture.

Life imitates art I guess 😞

I recently showed the Beetlejuice show to my six year old and I’m glad to say it holds up. He did think it was a touch too spooky at times but overall he likes the characters and gross-ness of it.

Bob, please adopt me so I can get into Canada before it's too late.

Ah, I was wondering about that. I had to watch someone's bad VHS rip of it but I suppose that only added to the experience.

My daughter and her friend would pretend to be Zelda and Hilda from Link Between Worlds.
