As we head into production season 5 and a huge changeover for the series, we're joined by first-time guest, writer/podcaster Evan Susser! The Doughboys Commissioner helps us explore Conan O'Brien's final full ep of The Simpsons, as we give a timeline of how his unprecedented hiring to Late Night impacted the show. Then we dig into Homer's incredible trip to college,  one of the best eps ever, with nerds, pigs, and top-notch animation. Listen before the crusty old dean finds out!

The bee bit my bottom, now my bottom's big!

Conan's final full episode is funny now considering the recent series premiere.

They had to call it School of Hard Knockers because they used a Pac-Man shape for the C on the title screen to signify the movie was from the 80s.

Undoubtedly a Top 5 episode. The jade monkey bit is probably my favorite non-sequitur of the entire series.

The ironic thing about the episode where Scratchy gets Itchy is that Roger Myers Jr. calls and pitches that episode to Marge in season two when he suggests Scratchy throws Itchy in acid

I actually have the Table Draft of this script (dated 3/18/93) that I'll be uploading around the original air date. It's pretty close to the final episode with mostly dialogue changes and a few extra scenes. At least in this script, I can confirm that Homer doesn't pull the Dean around with his car (pretty sure Mirkin was just joking on the commentary), and it does end with Homer getting away with cheating. Another quick bit of trivia: If the George Meyer script files are accurate, Conan was on his way to the record for Bart's Inner Child when he got the call for Late Night (Monday, April 26, 1993). This was also Mike Scully's first day at the Simpsons; he remembers shaking hands with Conan right before Conan left to take THE phone call.

For any interested in checking out Monty Python I'd recommend 'And Now for Something Completely Different'. It is a feature-length anthology of their best sketches from the TV show, in most (if not all) cases actually re-filmed and generally improved upon. I watched every episode of Flying Circus for the first time during covid and that was a bit of a slog, but for me the movies and that anthology are great.

I asked David Silverman if the pose of "now my bottom big" was cribbed from Oliver Hardy in the classic comedy short HOG WILD, and he said, "Probably." Judge for yourself (it comes at 6:55). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buVa5C4Vd8g

To get really, "A World Without Zinc" about it, the internet and all telecom works because of optical amplifiers that have rods of the lanthanide erbium embedded in a certain crystal ("YAG"). It looks like the space-fearing hero The Inanimate Carbon Rod from Deep Space Homer, but with a red-pink glow.
