While France does appreciate anime and manga, it does still have its backlash: Albert Uderzo, the artist of the beloved Asterix comics took real umbrage against manga when he saw more kids reading what he thought was all just gross and sexual imagery, instead of the european and american comics he prefers, and made an infamous Asterix comic trying to satirize it. It's a story where aliens representing american and japanese comics battle it out, with the "Nagma" character having yellow skin, dark hair, and slanted eyes straight out of old propaganda cartoons. It's widely considered by fans as the worst one in the series.
