Obligatory Japanese correction: "yarou" 野郎 doesn't mean "you," it means "guy" (but in a rude/aggressive way, yes). Examples of usage: "ano yarou" means "that guy," usually localized as "that bastard" to get the rude meaning across "baka yarou" (something that often gets yelled at someone in anger) means "stupid guy" but gets localized as "idiot" or "asshole." An angry yakuza might say "kono yarou!" directed at you which is literally "this guy," but gets translated as "you bastard" (gets the meaning across). It can also be synonymous with "low-life." There's a movie series called "Truck Yarou" about truckers. The rude form of "you" that Henry was thinking of might be "omae"?

I was 8 when this movie came out and really wanted to see it, due to being a big fan of the cartoon. However, I'm not sure what tabloid my mum read but she told me I wouldn't like it, as it's much darker than the cartoon and not for kids, so I had to wait for it to come out on VHS. I did have the Turtle Power single on cassette though, which I guess helped be a number 1 hit in the UK. I did my re-watch for the podcast with my family but the kids weren't really into it. They both watched Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when it aired on Nick a few years back but the never really saw the Turtles as a big deal or very interesting. They were mortified however when my wife and I sang along with the whole Turtle Power song at the end credits, just from memory.

This was one of my favorite films as a kid. It came in one of the really thin cardboardy vhs containers. Easily ripped from how many times i was taking the tape out to play. And did get pizza.

It was Leslie Easterbrook that Brian Tochi's character was hot for in Police Academy 3.

My partner, who passed away last year, had a specific favorite turtle but, not having had any childhood TMNT experience, I could never remember who her pick was. Watching this for the podcast I can say with some confidence that Raphael was her fave. She had a lot of anger issues growing up and I think seeing that depicted on film resonated with her. I got the feeling that the movie was trying to draw parallels between how Raphael and Tatsu dealt with anger and failure and I think, for as small as those moments were, they were handled with a surprising sensitivity and relatability. It makes me wish the movie was more thematically focused. As it is, it feels like it was sorta half-doing a bunch of different themes, in a way that reminds me of the 2023 Mario movie, though I think 1990 TMNT is a much better movie.

That wasn’t a real Dominos pizza they were eating. You would never get a cheese pull like that off a Dominos pie, not even back then.

Me and my friends spent so much time imitating the violent actions of our turtle heroes.

“All fathers care for their sons” struck me as implied Aristotelian logic. At least in my head, it makes sense. It’s not saying that all those who conceive a child or have a fatherly relationship DO care for their children (many don’t, sadly). The implication is that those in the relationship who do care for their children, that fill that role, ARE fathers. A father is someone who cares for their son. All fathers care for their sons. Splinter is a father who cares for and misses his sons. And he implies that if Danny ‘s father truly is a father, he does care about Danny. I hope this made sense.😛

I still have such a soft spot for this and the sequel, even though both obviously have their share of problems (especially Secret of the Ooze), and I think I only appreciate the original more as time goes on. Despite having seen it a billion times, there was still so much I didn't know about how it was made. I LOVE Mutant Mayhem, but I honestly hope that Last Ronin is live-action with a good practical turtle suit because that would be incredible
