Happy Friday y'all! In this Aftershow we cover:

  • The project we almost went with instead (edible water bottle)
  • All the research into glow powder
  • Different “garden” designs we almost went with
  • Was making Echo worth it?
  • What we thought about incorporating AI into our project, was it a fun idea?
  • Would we do anything different if we did this project again?

My concern with "AI" projects isn't about fear so much as it is about ethics. The current models, including chatGPT and all image generation, were built on words and images that were stolen from the creators. I think the dynamic is interesting, but I wouldn't want to see any future use of that sort of software until one is trained exclusively on works from consenting creators.

I’m not sure it’s that cut-and-dry. Every internalized experience has impact. When humans see A Thing it becomes part of the ideative process, consciously or not, with or without consent. Computers have a different notion of “memory”, but both AI and humans fold previous input into future output. The primary differences are quantity, longevity, and “post-processing”. The last is the most interesting, but difficult. The first two are double-edged swords. Computers can digest more information, but don’t have the same filtering in place any given human dies. Computers can retain more, but without those filters, and the continual processing that happens in human brains, a computer’s data (in general) is less dynamic than a human’s. This has both positive and negative aspects. So: we can’t *stop* arbitrary consumption of data. It’s use by machines isn’t an issue on its own—its more about ownership, compensation, limiting “too-similar” derivatives, and attempting to ensure humans maintain leadership in the creative space. I have some doubts around the last.
