Leather ping pong net w/ lasers, 3D printing, & Bob Clagett | How to

We made a wooden ping pong table with Bob from I Like to Make Stuff (http://ilt.ms/yt) and had to make a really cool leather net using lasers and 3D printing to go along with it! 👇 materials & links below! 👇 Bob’s awesome ping pong table: https://youtu.be/rzVJrBOsf0M Check out ISOtunes, our fave hearing protection: https://amzn.to/2uf0cnC Patreon and Aftershow https://www.patreon.com/evanandkatelyn Merch & store http://etsy.com/shop/evanandkatelyn Instagram http://instagram.com/evanandkatelyn @evanandkatelyn TOOLS / MATERIALS (affiliate) ■ Heat set threaded insert https://amzn.to/2v3t96o ■ Brass thumb nuts https://amzn.to/2EEoPKa ■ Leather lacing chisel (poking device!) https://amzn.to/2EDTY0s ■ Waxed cord https://amzn.to/2qqx6fQ ■ Large-eyed needle https://amzn.to/2HsMMap ■ Barge contact cement https://amzn.to/2EEDzZt ■ Rotary cutter https://amzn.to/2qoqkHt ■ Glowforge laser cutter https://glowforge.us/FOXTTVRM ■ TAZ MOARstruder tool head https://goo.gl/D5Nocb ■ 3d Printer (Taz6) https://goo.gl/C5q7Wj ■ Matterhackers Black PLA https://goo.gl/8wbrjp ■ Metal bandsaw https://amzn.to/2qqtZVf ■ Metal belt sander https://amzn.to/2IKBfma FILMING GEAR (affiliate) ■ Fujifilm X-T10 http://amzn.to/2pblgac (main camera) ■ 35mm F 1.4 lens http://amzn.to/2whwP0N (makes things look fancy) ■ Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 V http://amzn.to/2DJTHJF (vlog and slow-mo camera) ■ Mic for voiceovers http://amzn.to/2ErgT3M ■ Pop filter for voiceovers http://amzn.to/2sqMPj4 ■ Desktop sound booth http://amzn.to/2EqIAJX ■ Wireless lav mics http://amzn.to/2BCqtKQ ■ Main tripod http://amzn.to/2whGqED ■ Pan head for tripod http://amzn.to/2fhX3wh STAY UP TO DATE ■ Instagram @evanandkatelyn ■ Twitter https://twitter.com/EvanAndKatelyn ■ Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/evanandkatelyn/ ■ Blog http://evanandkatelyn.com ■ Etsy http://etsy.com/shop/evanandkatelyn This project has two parts, leatherworking for the net and 3D printing for the supports. We started with the leather. We were also using a laser in one of our projects for the first time and learned a lot about both. After a lot of experiments (read: trial and error) we settled on a crisscrossing design for the leather net. We cut and engraved it in 7 different setups on the Glowforge. We used tape to help w/ these setups and keep everything spaced evenly. Once we were done with the laser cutting it was time for another first! Hand stitching leather. Also super satisfying. Throughout the leatherworking we were working on our clamps. We had modeled the clamps before we went up to see Bob and thought that making them would be a cakewalk, especially when we found out that he had the MOARstruder (which honestly was amazing), but of course we ran into complications. After remodeling almost everything and a lot of fiddling it functioned great. We didn’t finish or paint anything because the black PLA with the super thick layer lines actually looked pretty nice. We also really liked the brass accents we used for the thumb nuts (and also the heat set threaded brass insert, even though you can’t see it much). I personally love the look of the leather. I wonder how it will hold up over time. That is definitely the coolest gnip gnop table I have ever seen.

Thank you!! yeah we built in the tightening ability so hopefully if it sags over time it should be ok. We talked with the folks at Tandy leather beforehand and they said they think it should work!

Great project you two! I'm glad for you that you got to work with Bob on a project. Very cool. For many years my Dad has worked with Barge Cement (and a number of other contact cements) on a daily basis for his work. He suggested the following tips which I have used on some of my projects (in my videos) and they might be helpful to you- once you apply the Barge let it sit until it is dry, at least an hour, but that can vary depending on humidity, temp and material. Then he uses a hot air gun to heat up the entire glued surface before sticking the work piece together and hammering. This gives a super, long lasting bond. This technique works on foam as well (like for cosplay stuff). Lastly he won't work (or let me work) with any contact cement without serious ventilation and/or an appropriate respirator. He has a down draft table in his shop that he glues everything up on and it pulls the bad fumes down and out of the building. Apparently there are a number of substances in contact glues that are heavier than air so it helps to pull them downward. That stuff is pretty nasty but perhaps it was adding to your goofyness in the video ;) Anyway, great job, looking forward to seeing Bob's video next. Keep up the great work!!

So many things to learn about Barge! Thank you for all the awesome tips. We plan on trying some foamsmithing so we'll give the heat gun trick a shot. In our shop we usually have the garage door open so hopefully we are ok fume-wise but weve got some respirators we can use too. So much good knowledge - thank you! -K
