Fun story about this track:

The label sent it to a very talented mastering engineer in the UK to master it. I don't think he knew I was on-copy, because he basically called the mix absolute trash and that he would tell anyone else to start over. I was frustrated after spending months on it, but I also thought all of his concerns were valid, so I asked him what we could do to make it better.

He told me to half all the compression I was doing, including sidechain compression. Low and behold, it actually made a positive difference.

Moral of the story: mastering engineers are buttheads, sometimes, and overcompression sucks.
