Got really into John Woo because of my friends dad (a classic 90s karate single dad) who was very excited about Hard Target coming out. I still remember how disappointed we all were seeing Hard Target on opening day… I also remember ordering the Cantonese version of this movie poster from a poster shop, and it took 2 months to import, and my parents were not happy with a 13 year old having a poster of a dude smoking a heater, while holding a baby and guns. I want to say it was like $25 which would be a real investment for that age, coming home on my bike with a giant tube out of nowhere.

I’ll be your woodwinds guy, Chow is playing a clarinet in HB. Kenny G usually plays a soprano sax. It’s in the same key as a tenor, which is why people, including Coltrane played both.

From 2 to 4 years ago I was listening to this podcast in hiroshima.

Was obsessed with Woo as 13/14yo. Bought most of his movies on expensive VHS imported from UK (to Sweden), and watched endlessly. Confess being so bummed out when my local videostore later started renting them, I stole several of the covers; my older brother immediately identifying that I had done so bc it made me feel less special. Never denied it, no regrets but good to get off my chest.

Same video store also had a Hardboiled 2: The Last Blood that I remember renting and hating, but turns out it was an older film (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099888/) released in UK as HB2 as a cheap sales trick. If I had only known back then, would have saved me a lot of grief.

That comment on the report card is the reason all of our comments are “canned” and vetted by lawyers…

Remake “Hard Boiled” with two fat leads and call it “Soft Boiled”
