I grew up fairly close to the town Stand by Me was filmed in (Brownsville, Oregon) and its still a pretty big deal for residents after nearly 40 years. Brownsville hosts Stand by Me Day every July since the mid 2000s. They hold pie eating contests, offer tours of filming locations, etc. I guess Brownsville citizens saw the fanfare that happens with a few hours away on the North Oregon coast with Astoria's annual Goonies celebration, so they tried to mimic it.
