Chapter 8

“No reply, huh? Right, hide, Cassie, hide from me…” Mavis grunted the next day.

At the kitchen table, not able of enjoying her breakfast as she still tried to reach her “friend” who stood up on Jesse.

Now, his big sister was upset. Angry at her friend. And partially angry at herself…

“Oh, good morning, you´re up early.” Commented Corrie as she entered the kitchen.

“Yeah, I didn´t have such a good sleep last night…” Mavis admitted.

“Was it because of Jesse? Aww, Mae, don´t blame yourself for that, you can´t control someone else´s actions, not even your friends.” Corrie said.

“Why not?! If I had known, I would´ve waited by the door and kicked her ass back in. Did you know that he cried? I could hear him, his light sobbing. You know I hate that!” Mavis hates hearing her brother cry, and not because she doesn´t like the sound, or the winning, or thinks of it as a sign of weakness. She does because, sometimes, he cries about things she cannot fix.

“Aww, you worried about our little brother? That´s cute.” Corrie said.

“He´s a grown man. If someone makes him cry, that means he´s really hurt. And you know that I will always hurt those who hurt him. That´s just how the chain works.” Mavis explained.

“Listen, I don´t like this any more than you do, but there´s no point on staying mad. He told us we couldn´t keep him inside a bubble. And this is a regular experience, trust me, multiple guys have stood up on me the second I stand up to greet them.” Corrie explained.

“So? Bunch of jerks. The fact that you´re taller doesn´t mean you´re not lovely. Same for Jesse, he´s a bit short, ok, but that doesn´t mean he´s less of a man. He´s just…” Mavis started.

“A nice guy in a small package?” Corrie added.

“Yeah… but we should avoid speaking of height for a couple of days. You know… he´s sensitive right now.” Mavis said.

“Aww, look at that, all worried about Jesse´s feelings. Who are you and what have you done to my mean sister?” Corrie playfully said.

“Stop! You know I care for him. I just… tease him. But I care, in my very own way. And now, my own way wants me to find Cassie and make her apologize. I swear, if I find her…” She´d probably force her to date Jesse again, to make amends. But that may not be the best thing to do.

“Mae, stop. Just let it go. Listen, you did what you could. There´s no way we can control the way things go on his dates. Still, I don´t want that to happen again. The last thing we need is for it to happen twice and kill all of his confidence. That´s why I have an idea for the next date.” Corrie said.

“Right, next one´s your turn. What are you thinking about? Do you have someone in mind?” Mavis asked.

“Yes, I do. And it wasn´t… quite my idea.” Corrie doesn´t quite like this next idea for the date.

It would be a double date. Why? Well, it´ll be easier if she´s with him, just to make sure things don´t go as bad as they have so far.

Now, why is she not so eager about this? And, why wasn´t this her idea in the first place?

So, it´s no mystery that Corrie´s a pretty lady. Even if people have stood up on her. But that´s mostly because certain men are intimidated by her height.

She´s sweet, caring, and she´s got a beautiful smile, but she´s still a 6´8” amazon. Let´s face it, some men don´t really want to date a woman several inches taller than them. However, there´s a few who would.

And there´s some who look forward to it. Some who´s deepest, and sometimes most secret, desire is to meet a tall lady. An amazon, a goddess, their tall queen. And Corrie has met a guy like that. Not that she´s fully aware he´s into tall women only because of their height, which is quite obvious.

He´s a co-worker, and she´s sure he´s got a crush on her. Even if she´s politely rejected him a couple times, sometimes just faking to be busy, she´s never really closed that door. And this time, she might find a good use for him. Even if it sounds as if she was using him…

This guy´s name is Brian. He´s about her age, and he stands at 5’9”. Now, why is she “using” him? Well, the last time she politely rejected him, he had a few words for her. Not that he was begging, but he was kind of negotiating…

“Please, we don´t have to go alone, I mean… a double date? Maybe? I know a girl, if you know a guy, we could… maybe… you know what I mean…” he wasn´t a bad guy, he was just… a little short for Corrie.

She knows there´s not many chances for her to find a man taller than her. Even if there´s plenty out there. Most men pick women shorter than her. And she knows she might have to lower her expectances a little. Still, she´s not willing to go under six-feet-tall. Even a six-foot guy would be eight-inches shorter. Which is a bit too much to her.

And Brian´s not even that height, but she´s willing to give him a chance if that means she can look after Jesse. She´d do a lot to help her brother.

“Good morning, Jesse. Would you like some breakfast? I was about to get something done for myself. I can put a bit more for you. If you want.” Corrie said as a not so good-looking Jesse walked. Thankfully, they were over with the “plan”.

“No, thanks. I´ll have some cereal…” Both could notice a little sadness on his words.

“How come you didn´t ask me that?” Mavis said, trying to set her mind somewhere else.

“You were already here when I arrived. I just assumed you already had breakfast.” Corrie said.

“So? I like your cooking better than mine. I could have a… second breakfast.” Mavis said.

“Wow, second? Keep going that way and you´ll be my not-so-little sister soon.” Corrie teased.

“What? You think I´ll gain weight? Never. I work out. Besides, an extra meal once a week isn´t that bad. Much less when it´s breakfast. You know what they say, a big breakfast is good for you.”

“Fine, I´ll have to double what I wanted to cook…” Corrie said, and Mavis clapped in excitement.

“Jesse, I have some news for you.” Said Corrie as she stood before the stove, making some breakfast. “It´s about your next date.”

“You know, I don´t… I don´t really want to talk about it.” Jesse said, feeling down.

“Listen to her, you might like the idea…” Mavis added.

It was weird for him to see both his sisters having the same opinion about something. Maybe it was convenient for him to listen.

And after a mild explanation, he was intrigued.

“So… a double date? With you?” Jesse asked. Corrie was going to be there?

“Yes. Why? You don´t want me there? This type of dates are more common than you think.” Besides, there´s no date if Corrie´s not there…

“No, I just… I never thought of it as an option. That´s all.” A double date? It might be interesting…

One would think that Brian would have no hopes by now. In real time, it´s been like a year since he started trying to date Corrie. But the thing is, to him, a girl like Corrie, she´s worth the wait.

She´s everything he´s looking for, and more!

“A date? Sure!” He said as soon as Corrie mentioned it.

“Yes, but I want to be clear, it´ll be a double date. I have… I´d like to help my brother, he´s a bit shy, you know.” Corrie said.

“Brother? Sure! No worries, I… how old is he?” Brian asked.

“Just a bit younger than me. He´s 21.” Corrie answered.

“Great! I think I know someone. Do you have any day in mind? A date?” He asked.

“Now that you mention it. How about Friday? This Friday, is it ok? Or maybe too soon?” she asked.

“Oh no, it´s perfect.” The plan was made, and now, it was just a matter of time for Jesse´s new date.

Who would it be? This was a lady none of them knew. Not a friend of Corrie, or Mavis. But Mavis´s last friend didn´t prove to be trustable, so anyone would be better.

Besides, Brian´s a nice guy, he´ll know someone nice, right?

Corrie was a bit nervous about this, and Jesse was just as nervous as always.

His last date didn´t gave him much hopes. In fact, it just made him aware of a new possibility. People might not show up. Sad, but part of life.

Now, he won´t keep thinking about this, he won´t have this thought in his mind permanently. The other night, he might have cried, but it was because he felt a bit humiliated. Was he not good enough? What if he wasn´t good enough for anyone? That hit him, hit him hard.

But then, he remembered, there´s plenty of fish in the sea. If this lady was not the one, there´s still plenty others. After all, the world´s full of possibilities.

With this in mind, he prepared for the next date, and within the blink of an eye, Friday night came.

“Aww, you look so cute!” Corrie said.

“Corrie, please, don´t call me cute. I look… handsome.” He said, reassuring himself that he was a man, and not just Corrie´s little brother.

This was a bit of a problem, now that he thinks about it. Will she ruin things for him with her jargon? She calls him cute too often. Sure, she´s 6´8”, and he´s 5´5”, technically, he´s “cute” from her point of view. But he´s still a 21-year-old-man. He´s beyond that. Handsome would be a better word.

Now, Corrie was only making the comment because she liked his outfit. A nice shirt, a pair of nice pants. And polished shoes. Certainly, the look of a man who´s on his way to a date. A casual date, of course.

Meanwhile, Corrie looked stunning! Her large, sensuous body, accentuated by her dress. Short, at least on her, showing off her long, sexy legs. And her big bosom, filling out the dress, with a nice view at her big, round breasts.

She could take your breath away, for sure…

They arrived at the restaurant, and after just a minute, Corrie spotted Brian. He was already waiting for them, next to Jesse´s new date.

Jesse turned, searching for the guy she was waving at, and he met this guy waving back. He searched, looking for his own date. Looking for the lady.

How would they know who it was? It was simple. Brian told them what they´ll be wearing. He´d be wearing a navy-blue shirt, and the lady will wear a jade-colored dress.

Jesse´s eyes widened as he spotted this lady on the jade-colored dress. She was next to Brian, but she was tall!

He had a question for his sister before they dated. Just how tall was Brian? Her answer?

“He´s not that tall, about 5´9”.” Taller than Jesse, sure, but not by much. However, the lady next to him, she was huge!

It´ll be right to say she´s over six-feet-tall, and it´ll be right to say that… she´s 6´3”.

Why is she so tall? That was Jesse´s first question.

It´ll made sense if this lady was a friend of either his sisters. Volleyball team, basketball team, plenty of tall ladies over there. But why is she so tall if she´s Brian´s friend?

Well, there´s a simple answer, there´s ladies out there who are 6´3”, or even taller. But the not-so-simple answer, well… Brian´s always looking for a tall queen, therefore, he becomes friends with tall ladies, in the hopes that, maybe, they will fall in love with him. Which hasn´t happened yet.

Before he met Corrie, and decided she´s the love of his life, he met Eva. Of course, he didn´t ask her out a hundredth times as he did with Corrie. Instead, Eva was just a good friend of his. A tall friend.

“Hello, I´m Corrie, and this is my brother Jesse.” Corrie said as they stopped in front of these two. Their dates.

“I´m so glad you came!” Brian immediately said, genuinely excited, “Nice to meet you, Jesse.” He shook Jesse´s hand, “This is Eva, a friend of mine. And… your date for tonight, dude.” He said.

Jesse looked up at Eva, smiling. But he was nervous. Deep down, even if he didn´t want to think about it, he feared the words: “Not my type…” coming out of Eva´s mouth.

Lucky for him, Eva was not a mean lady, like Cassie. Instead, she extended her hand and shook his hand, politely.

“Nice to meet you, Jesse.” Eva was a kind woman, and she was just slightly older than Jesse, about 24-years-old.

“I got us a table, come.” Brian said. So eager to this.

He has something in mind. It was such a success that Corrie agreed on dating him, and now that he got his chance, he can´t let this one slide. He can´t risk things getting ruined.

He´s got a plan, to show Corrie how good of a man he is. Finding a date for her brother is a good start, right?

“You didn´t tell me he was short.” Eva whispered to Brian´s ear, staying a good deal behind Jesse and Corrie as they were on their way to their table.

“Come on, he seems like a good guy. Besides, I thought he´d be like seven-feet-tall, you´ve seen her, you can´t blame me for being wrong.” Genetics, they don´t always work the same way…

At first, this was quite regular, a couple drinks, getting to know each other. Chatting a bit.

Jesse felt good, this date was nice, he was not forced to keep things interesting on his own. Someone else would pop up with some other thing to say, avoiding boredom amongst the table.

And Corrie must admit Brian´s fun. She knew he was a nice guy, but he´s just full of stories.

“And there I was, after telling the guy that the painting was not such a big deal. Can you imagine my reaction when I was told that -that- guy painted it? Seriously, what are the odds?” Everyone giggled to his anecdote of that time when he told the very same artist that his art wasn’t so good.

“Did they kick you out?” Corrie asked, interested on his words.

“Nah, the guy thought it was a joke. Lucky me he wasn´t one of those guys who take things too seriously. Else, who knows, maybe he would´ve stabbed me with one of his brushes! Hahaha.” Brian answered, and he also realized Corrie was interested on what he had to say.

Her eyes, falling on him like the moonshine falls from the sky. Her attention, he even forgot there were other people there. He was just happy to have her attention, for the first time.

Tonight, he was not just the annoying guy who asked her on a date several times, this time, he was the guy she dated!

Jesse thought he needed to be a bit more like Brian. Relaxed, more talkative, maybe share a bit of himself with his date. Eva seems quiet.

“Art, huh…” He said, looking at Eva.

“Sorry?” She asked as she didn´t quite listened to him.

“Oh, I said, art, you know, it takes shape for others, and for some, well… not so much.” He commented, trying to add a little some to the conversation, showing her he had a certain comprehension about that aspect of the world.

“Yeah…” that´s all she said.

He was hoping they could start a conversation out of that, but she simply gave him a one-word-reply. If we can call “yeah.” A word and not a mere sound.

The rest of the night, he tried his best to impress her, but he wasn´t so lucky. He made her smile, once, but after that, he didn´t have much success.

On the other hand, Brian was having such a good luck with Corrie!

“I swear, I got into the concert by telling the guard I was a part of the staff.” Brian said, in another of his fun stories.

“No way, and they didn´t caught you?” Corrie asked, really interested.

“Nah, I just went to the bathroom, changed my shirt, and went with the rest of the crowd. Of course, I wasn´t aware that it was a free concert so… I guess I didn´t have to bother on that one, right?” Corrie giggled.

“You´re so dumb!” Corrie said, playfully.

“Dumb, sure, but I still made you laugh, right?” Brian said.

“I guess…” Corrie was having a good time, she never really thought things would come up this nice.

And another thing was, she kind of forgot about Jesse…

“So… do you like music?” Jesse asked Eva.

“I do, mostly classical music.” Eva answered.

“Oh, like violins, piano and… all that stuff, huh?” He commented.

“Yes. How about you?” He knew he had to make a clever comment, so he replied:

“Well, I like to listen to the lyrics. You know, to see what kind of poetry each artist has written. Because, in the end, a song´s also a poem, right? It´s got sentences, a meaning, a message. Artists share their thoughts with the world through their songs.” He said, clever, right?

“Or, they simply sing whatever their marketing team tells them to. Nowadays, sometimes music´s just meant to sell. That´s why I prefer classical music, so that you can feel the artists fingers on the tiles, on the strings. And you can feel their passion through their music. Where you don´t need any letters to understand their love, their pain.” That sounded better than his words.

“That´s… also true…” Ok, she was clearly not interested.

Things were bad. But not for all.

Brian had an idea. A plan, maybe it´ll work, he´ll have to try. Better be sorry than safe, right?

“Corrie, can we… talk in private?” He´s got a proposal…
