I've been frustrated a bit watching people react to fantasy stories who seem to think that the origin of some fantasy element is from a game or anime, and however they appear there is how it is supposed to be. They fail to see that those common elements often originate from real cultures' mythology and folklore. I am glad to see you recognize the bigger picture. Some people should look up things more often. Besides Lord of the Rings, I believe D&D standardized a lot of these fantasy elements, then I think JRPG's had an influence. Slime turned the usual power hierarchy in JRPG's and fantasy on its head by making a slime the top of the pyramid, among other things.
