Personally, I may be wrong but I feel like the characters of Re:zero act very "japanese" (more than in many animes), sometimes I feel like you have to be familiar with japanese culture to really understand what the characters imply when they talk and everything, their behavior in general. But regarding the main reason of why everything happens this season it's pretty straightforward: Roswaal wants to make Subaru more decisive, like himself, he wants to hone his skills and mindset. For that, he forces him to choose between the sanctuary (and by extension Emilia) or the manor (Rem, Beatrice etc...): he sent the killers to the manor, and used his magic to attract the Great Rabbit in the sanctuary. He probably isn't responsible for the beast-people taking all of them hostage until they pass the trial, but he used that opportunity. Subaru refuses to "choose" and challenged Roswaal, choosing to save everyone but this time not doing it alone and using all of his friends for it. In the meantime, it's the occasion for Emilia to face her past, and to save Beatrice from her fate, and to find new people for the main team etc.

From the next episode I enjoyed season a lot. I liked the venture into Emilia's past.
