In the novel Fitz's story (prior to his arrival at university) is told in the form of extra stories parallel to the main story. The novel is pure text with some illustrations and none of her/him, her/his name is not mentioned either, it is very difficult to realise that she/he is Sylphy, so during all this story arc the readers really think along with Rudeus that he might be attracted to men, plus when he was in the brothel he was told that his problem is probably because he is afraid of WOMEN haha. In the anime they decided to show it directly as it is impossible to hide visually. Great reaction.

Ohhh wow yeah that's a super interesting contrast. Makes sense there was no other way to tackle it with the anime but they still did it well. Thanks for letting me know! :)

It's not very well shown in the anime but Rudeus had a lot of thoughts about how fucked up slavery in that world was. He just decided to respect how this world works, after all what can he do, it's difficult for a primitive society to survive without either slavery or serfdom (serfdom kinda replaced slavery in the middle ages in europe, overall it was a little better, apart from some cases). A lot of things are lost in the adaptation.

Zanoba is just obsessed with figures. He's a decent guy. It's just a passion that he has no talent in. Its not much different from rich people collecting cars or paintings. People take those obsessions too far as well. The slave stuff is tough, but Rudy was exposed to it back during the smugglers and Doldia village stuff. Rudy sees it as something he can't personally change about society. It's a legal business and trying to free them forcibly would make him a criminal. Stopping smugglers is fine, though. At least, with Julie he made sure she had the will to live on and he strives to give her a better life and more opportunities than she ever could've gotten otherwise.
