For Canute's speech, I think what he means is that God created all these flawed people that were destined to sin and kill and fight each other. Those Vikings will never go to heaven because of what they did (the Christian heaven). As a rebellion to God's will he will conquer the world and unify all these abandoned warriors under him so that he can give them a purpose in life (paradise on earth). By doing that he will also stop wars and a lot of the suffering, as his army will be unmatched, and he will get to decide how people live. This is why Thorfinn thought he was incredible, he never thought about having empathy for those soulless killers (he used to be one of them). Canute is on a mission that will leave many corpses on the way, but he has an incredible resolve, and I think that's why people close to him are so loyal. They know he's doing what is best for them.

It is almost as if he is seen as a messiah figure, while Canute has some ‘true’ intentions, he definitely is misusing his power. But we’ll have to see. I am definitely excited to se where this story leads.
